What will you learn?

This programme immerses you in the full cycle of screen-making, from script development and pre-production planning through to on-set camera work, sound recording, directing, and post-production editing. You develop hands-on skills with industry-standard equipment — cameras, lighting rigs, editing suites and audio tools — from early in the course. Specialisms typically include documentary, drama, animation production, or screen journalism, and many programmes include a supervised industry placement in Irish production companies or broadcasters such as RTÉ, Virgin Media Television, or independent studios. A typical week mixes studio workshops, group production projects, screenwriting seminars, and critical film studies lectures. Erasmus exchanges to European film schools are available in some years.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO with a standard Leaving Certificate, typically requiring at least six subjects including English at Higher level, which is strongly recommended given the emphasis on narrative and script work. Points requirements at IADT and TU Dublin are generally moderate to high, reflecting demand for these popular creative programmes. Subjects such as Art, Media Studies, Music, or a language are useful but rarely mandatory. QQI Level 5 or 6 FET awards in Media Production, Creative Media, or Multimedia offer a recognised progression route into Year 1 or Year 2 via the QQI links scheme. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply directly and are assessed on portfolio, interview, and relevant experience. HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible applicants.

Career Prospects

The Irish screen sector is experiencing genuine growth, with international productions, animation studios, and home-grown streaming content all driving demand for skilled crew and production staff. Graduate employment rates from programmes at IADT are strong, with many students securing industry contacts during placement that lead directly to work. Freelance and project-based work is common in this field, so building a strong showreel and professional network during your studies is essential. Roles in post-production and editing are particularly in demand as content volumes increase across digital platforms.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are increasingly used in post-production workflows, including automated colour grading, AI-assisted editing, subtitle generation, and visual effects compositing, and you will be expected to become familiar with these during your studies. Generative AI is beginning to influence scriptwriting assistance, storyboarding, and pre-visualisation, though creative judgement and directorial vision remain distinctly human skills. The core craft skills of storytelling, cinematography, and sound design are not easily replicated by AI, meaning graduates who combine technical fluency with creative ability remain highly employable. Keeping up with evolving tools will be an ongoing professional expectation throughout your career.
