What does a Coppersmith do?

As a coppersmith you craft, fabricate and repair items made from copper, brass and other non-ferrous metals for a wide range of industrial, commercial and artistic purposes. Your daily work involves shaping sheet metal and pipe using specialist smithing tools, precision measuring equipment and forming techniques to produce items such as brewing vessels, pipework systems, HVAC components and decorative metalwork. You read technical drawings and specifications to ensure each piece meets exact tolerances and standards, and you work closely with engineers, plumbers, site managers and other tradespeople on construction sites, in workshops and in industrial facilities. Quality checking finished work and maintaining your tools and equipment are also a regular part of the role.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Coppersmith

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6:15 a.m. You are working out of a fabrication workshop attached to a mechanical and electrical contractor based on an industrial estate outside Limerick. After a quick breakfast you are on site by 7:30 a.m., signing in at the gate and collecting your PPE — steel-toe boots, gloves, safety glasses and hard hat — before the morning toolbox talk begins at 7:45 a.m. The site manager runs through the day's programme and flags a confined-space permit that will affect access to part of the plant room where you are due to install a copper pipework run. By 8:00 a.m. you are at your bench reviewing the isometric drawing for a section of 54 mm copper pipe that feeds a heat exchanger. You check the tolerances carefully, mark up your lengths and use a pipe cutter to make clean, square cuts. Each end is deburred and reamed so the joint will be sound. You are silver-soldering — brazing — the fittings today rather than using press-fit connectors, because the operating temperature of this system demands it.

Required Education

Most coppersmiths in Ireland enter the trade through a SOLAS-registered plumbing or metal fabrication apprenticeship, which typically runs over four years and combines on-the-job training with off-the-job phases at an Education and Training Board (ETB) or Institute of Technology, leading to an NFQ Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Craft. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Engineering, Construction Studies, Technical Graphics and Mathematics provide a strong practical and theoretical foundation for this route. Some entrants first complete a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC course in Engineering Technology or Fabrication and Welding before seeking apprenticeship registration. Specialist copper-working skills — including forging, forming and joining of non-ferrous metals — are typically developed on the job and through focused modules within the apprenticeship programme. There is no statutory registration body specifically for coppersmiths in Ireland, though membership of relevant trade bodies such as the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) is common among experienced practitioners.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most coppersmiths begin as apprentices, earning while they learn over a four-year programme before qualifying at NFQ Level 6. Once qualified, you typically work as a journeyman coppersmith or metal fabricator on construction sites, in manufacturing facilities or with specialist contractors, building expertise in areas such as brewing equipment, HVAC systems or ornamental metalwork. With experience you may progress to senior tradesperson, site supervisor or workshop manager roles, taking on responsibility for planning, estimating and overseeing the work of other tradespeople. Some experienced coppersmiths move into self-employment, setting up their own fabrication businesses or taking on specialist commissions.

AI Impact on the job

AI and automation are beginning to influence metal fabrication through CNC forming machines, robotic welding systems and AI-assisted design tools that can speed up the production of standard components. However, the bespoke, hands-on nature of much coppersmithing work — particularly in brewing vessel manufacture, ornamental metalwork and complex site-based pipework — means that skilled manual craftsmanship remains essential and difficult to automate fully. AI-driven project management and estimating software is increasingly used in the construction sector, and familiarity with these tools will be an advantage. Overall, AI is more likely to change how coppersmiths plan and document their work than to replace the core fabrication skills of the trade.
