A Metal Fabrication apprenticeship trains you to work with structural steel and sheet metal, learning to cut, shape, join and assemble metal components to precise specifications. You develop skills in coded welding processes (MIG, TIG, MMA), oxy-fuel and plasma cutting, fitting, and the use of hand and power tools. Training alternates between on-the-job learning in a fabrication workshop or on a construction site and off-the-job phases in a SOLAS-approved training centre or ETB. A typical week might involve reading engineering drawings, setting up welding equipment, fabricating steel structures, and attending theory classes on metallurgy or health and safety. You also gain experience with quality inspection and interpreting weld symbols and tolerances.

Entry to a Metal Fabrication apprenticeship requires you to first secure a contract with a SOLAS-registered employer, who sponsors you throughout the programme. Most employers expect you to have completed the Leaving Certificate or Junior Certificate with a reasonable standard of achievement; no specific Higher-level subjects are mandated, though Technical Graphics, Engineering, and Metalwork are useful Junior Cycle backgrounds. A good grasp of mathematics is important for calculating measurements and reading technical drawings. There is no CAO application process; you apply directly to employers or register interest through apprenticeship.ie. Mature applicants aged 18 or over who can demonstrate relevant practical experience or a QQI Level 5 Engineering award may also be considered by employers.
Demand for skilled metal fabricators in Ireland remains strong, driven by large-scale infrastructure investment, data centre construction, and pharmaceutical and renewable energy projects. Qualified apprentices holding an NFQ Level 6 Advanced Certificate are well positioned to move into senior fabrication, inspection or supervisory roles relatively quickly. Gross annual salaries for qualified fabricators typically range from around €38,000 to €55,000, with coded welders and supervisors earning at the higher end. Self-employment and subcontracting are realistic options for experienced tradespeople.
AI and digital tools are increasingly influencing metal fabrication through CNC cutting machines, robotic welding systems, and automated nesting software that optimise material use. As a fabricator, you will need to understand how to set up, monitor and troubleshoot these automated systems alongside traditional manual skills. AI-assisted quality inspection using vision systems is becoming more common in larger fabrication shops. However, complex site work, coded welding certification, and bespoke structural work continue to require skilled human judgement and hands-on expertise.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
How to apply
Metal Fabrication is a SOLAS-registered craft apprenticeship; entry is employer-led, meaning you must first secure a contract of employment with a registered apprenticeship employer who registers you with SOLAS. Off-the-job training (phases) is delivered at an ETB training centre or designated training provider, and there is no CAO application involved.
