What does a Customer Success Manager do?

As a Customer Success Manager you act as the primary point of contact for a portfolio of customers, typically businesses using software-as-a-service (SaaS) products, ensuring they get genuine value from the platform and remain loyal, paying clients. You guide new customers through onboarding, monitor product adoption data, and step in proactively when usage signals suggest a customer may be at risk of cancelling their subscription. Day-to-day work involves running check-in calls and business reviews, coordinating with sales, technical support, and product teams to resolve issues or escalate problems, and identifying opportunities for customers to expand their use of the product. You produce regular reports on customer health scores, renewal rates, and upsell activity, presenting findings to internal stakeholders and to clients themselves.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Customer Success Manager

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the Dublin city-centre office just before half eight, grab a coffee and open your laptop. The first thing you do is check your customer health dashboard in Salesforce and Gainsight — two tools that pull together usage data, support ticket history and renewal dates. One of your accounts, a Cork-based logistics firm, has dropped its weekly active users by thirty per cent over the past fortnight. You flag it with a red health score and block out time later to investigate before their renewal comes up in six weeks. By nine o'clock you are on a video call with a new customer who signed up three weeks ago. This is part of onboarding — walking them through key features, answering their questions and making sure they are set up correctly from the start. You share your screen, run through a short checklist you have prepared, and take notes on any gaps they mention. After the call you log everything in the CRM and send a follow-up email with links to the help centre articles you discussed.

Required Education

Most Customer Success Manager roles in Ireland require an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree, commonly in Business, Marketing, Information Technology, or Communications; relevant degrees are offered at UCD, DCU, TU Dublin, and other technological universities across the country. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Business, Mathematics, and English at Higher level provide a strong foundation, while Economics or a modern language can be an advantage with multinational clients. Some employers accept candidates with a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree or a Level 6 Higher Certificate combined with demonstrable SaaS or account management experience. A QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC in Business or IT can serve as an alternative entry route into junior customer success or support roles, from which progression to a full Customer Success Manager position is possible. Postgraduate qualifications in Marketing, Digital Business, or Data Analytics (NFQ Level 9) are increasingly valued for senior positions. There is no statutory professional registration body for this occupation, though certifications from bodies such as the Customer Success Association or Gainsight are well regarded by employers.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many Customer Success Managers begin in related entry-level roles such as customer support specialist, sales development representative, or technical account co-ordinator before moving into a full CSM position, typically after one to three years of experience. From there, progression leads to Senior Customer Success Manager, where you manage larger or more strategically important accounts, and then to Team Lead or Customer Success Manager of a regional segment. With further experience, movement into Director of Customer Success or VP of Customer Success is possible, particularly within Ireland's large base of technology multinationals where these leadership roles carry significant budget and headcount responsibility. Lateral moves into sales, product management, or solutions consulting are also common, given the breadth of commercial and technical knowledge the role develops.

AI Impact on the job

AI tools are automating routine customer health monitoring, flagging at-risk accounts and generating first-draft renewal communications, which frees Customer Success Managers to focus on higher-value relationship and strategic work. Platforms such as Gainsight and Salesforce Einstein increasingly use machine learning to predict churn probability and recommend next-best actions, meaning strong data literacy is becoming essential for anyone in this role. However, the fundamentally human elements of the job — building trust, navigating difficult conversations, and understanding a client's evolving business context — remain beyond current AI capability and continue to differentiate effective practitioners. Managers who learn to work effectively alongside AI-driven insights, rather than ignoring or being replaced by them, will be best positioned for career advancement.
