Business Information Systems combines the study of business management with information technology, preparing you to work at the intersection of both fields. You will learn how organisations collect, manage and analyse data, and how technology can be used to solve real business problems. Core areas include database design, systems analysis, enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, and business analytics. Most programmes include a structured work placement, typically in your third year, with students securing roles in companies such as multinational tech firms, financial services and consulting. A typical week balances lectures on topics like project management or data modelling with hands-on lab sessions, group projects and case study analysis.

Entry is through the CAO and typically requires a minimum of six subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including English and Mathematics. Higher Level Maths is strongly recommended and may be required by some programmes, while subjects such as Accounting, Business or Applied Maths are advantageous. CAO points for this course are generally moderate to high, reflecting its popularity and the strength of graduate outcomes. If you do not meet the direct entry requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC award in IT or Business can provide a progression route into first or second year. Mature students, and those applying through HEAR or DARE access schemes, may be considered under reduced points or alternative entry criteria.
Graduate outcomes for Business Information Systems are strong, with most graduates securing employment or progressing to postgraduate study within months of finishing. Demand is driven by ongoing digital transformation across both the private and public sectors in Ireland. Salaries for entry-level roles typically range from approximately €32,000 to €42,000 per annum, with experienced professionals in roles such as senior business analyst or IT project manager earning €55,000 to €80,000 or more. The blend of business and technical skills makes graduates versatile and sought after across multiple industries.
Artificial intelligence is reshaping many of the core areas covered in this course, particularly data analytics, systems automation and business process management. You will increasingly be expected to understand AI-driven tools used in ERP systems, business intelligence platforms and predictive analytics. Rather than replacing graduates, AI is elevating the role of the business analyst towards higher-level interpretation, strategy and governance. Programmes are beginning to incorporate AI literacy, machine learning fundamentals and ethical considerations around data use as standard elements of the curriculum.
