What does a DevOps Engineer do?

As a DevOps Engineer you bridge the gap between software development and IT operations, building and maintaining the automated pipelines that move code from a developer's laptop into live production systems reliably and at speed. You design, configure and manage cloud infrastructure — typically on platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud — and use tools like Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform and Jenkins to automate deployments, scaling and monitoring. Your daily work involves collaborating closely with software developers, QA engineers, security teams and product managers to ensure systems are stable, secure and performant. You also respond to incidents, investigate root causes when services degrade, and continuously improve observability through logging, alerting and dashboards.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a DevOps Engineer

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 7:15 a.m. and before you've finished your coffee you're scanning Slack on your phone. Overnight monitoring alerts from your team's Grafana dashboards flagged a spike in error rates on a microservice running in your AWS environment. By the time you sit down at your desk in Dublin's docklands at 8:30 a.m. you've already read through the incident log your on-call colleague left and you know roughly where to start looking. The first hour is spent in the terminal. You pull logs from CloudWatch, trace the issue back to a misconfigured environment variable pushed in last night's deployment, and raise a rollback through your Jenkins pipeline. The fix takes twenty minutes to propagate. You document the incident in Confluence, noting timeline, root cause and action points, because post-mortems matter here — your team runs blameless retrospectives every Friday.

Required Education

A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Cloud Computing or a related discipline is the most common entry route, available at universities such as UCD, DCU, TU Dublin and University of Galway. Leaving Certificate subjects that provide a strong foundation include Mathematics (Higher Level is particularly advantageous), Physics, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. Some graduates enter from a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree and build DevOps skills through industry certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) or HashiCorp Terraform Associate. PLC courses in Computing or Networking at Level 5/6 QQI can provide an entry point into junior systems or support roles from which candidates upskill into DevOps. A Level 9 Masters in Cloud Computing or Cybersecurity is pursued by those moving into senior or specialist positions. There is no statutory professional registration body for DevOps Engineers in Ireland, though membership of Engineers Ireland is an option for those with engineering degrees.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most DevOps Engineers begin in junior or graduate roles such as Systems Administrator, Junior Cloud Engineer or DevOps Analyst, often spending two to three years mastering core tooling and cloud platforms. With experience, you progress to a mid-level DevOps Engineer role, taking ownership of entire CI/CD environments and mentoring junior colleagues. Senior DevOps Engineers in Ireland often specialise in areas such as platform engineering, site reliability engineering (SRE) or cloud architecture, or move into technical lead positions. Further progression can lead to roles such as Head of Platform Engineering, Cloud Architect or Engineering Manager, particularly within larger Irish tech firms or multinational operations.

AI Impact on the job

AI is already reshaping DevOps work through tools that automate code review, infrastructure anomaly detection and incident response suggestions, reducing the time spent on repetitive monitoring tasks. AI-assisted platforms such as GitHub Copilot and AIOps tools help engineers generate configuration code faster and identify performance bottlenecks more accurately. However, the judgement required to architect resilient systems, manage incidents in complex environments and make security trade-offs means that experienced DevOps Engineers remain essential. The role is evolving rather than being replaced, with engineers increasingly expected to configure, evaluate and govern AI-powered tooling as part of their standard responsibilities.
