What will you learn?

A Software Engineering degree focuses on the systematic design, development, testing, and maintenance of large-scale software systems. You study programming languages, software architecture, databases, operating systems, and agile development methodologies. The course takes a rigorous engineering approach, emphasising reliability, security, and scalability rather than simply writing code. Most programmes include a structured work placement — commonly a full academic year — with technology companies in Ireland or abroad, giving you genuine industry experience before you graduate. A typical week combines lectures, lab sessions writing and debugging code, group project work, and tutorials on topics such as system design or quality assurance.

Required Education

Entry is normally through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including English and Mathematics. Higher Level Maths is either compulsory or carries bonus points on most programmes, so it is strongly advisable; some universities require it outright. CAO points for Software Engineering at the universities listed are typically high, reflecting strong demand. If your points fall short, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET/PLC award in Computing or Software Development can provide a progression route onto Year 1 or directly into Year 2 of some degree programmes. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature-student CAO pathway, and HEAR and DARE schemes are available for eligible candidates.

Career Prospects

Graduate employment rates for Software Engineering are consistently high in Ireland, with most graduates securing relevant roles within months of finishing. Ireland's position as a European base for major US technology multinationals means demand for skilled software engineers remains strong and shows little sign of slowing. Salaries at entry level are competitive, typically ranging from around €38,000 to €52,000 gross per year, rising significantly with experience. Opportunities exist across every sector — healthcare, finance, media, government, and beyond — giving graduates considerable flexibility in where they work.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence tools such as large language model coding assistants are already changing how software engineers write, review, and document code, automating routine or repetitive tasks. However, the core engineering skills — system design, debugging complex systems, understanding security vulnerabilities, and managing large codebases — remain very much human responsibilities. Graduates who understand AI and machine learning concepts are increasingly valued, and many programmes now include dedicated AI or data science modules. Overall, AI is reshaping the daily workflow of software engineers rather than replacing the profession.
