What does a Home Support Worker do?

As a Home Support Worker you visit people in their own homes to help them live as independently as possible. You assist clients with personal care tasks such as washing, dressing, grooming, and preparing meals, while also carrying out light household duties like laundry and shopping. You monitor your clients' wellbeing, report any changes in their health or mood to a supervising nurse or care coordinator, and provide vital companionship to older adults, people with disabilities, or those recovering from illness. You typically work for the HSE or a private home care provider, managing a caseload of clients across a local area each day.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Home Support Worker

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6.45 am. You check your schedule on your employer's care management app — today you have six client visits spread across a rural county, and the first begins at 8.00 am. You fill a flask of tea, grab your work bag containing gloves, aprons, hand sanitiser and your client care plans, and set off in your own car. Your first client is an 81-year-old man living alone on a small farm. You help him wash, shave and dress, then prepare his porridge and set out his morning medication in the dosette box his pharmacist has pre-filled — you never administer medication yourself, but you can prompt him to take it. Before you leave you note his mood and mobility in the digital care record on your phone.

Required Education

There are no strict Leaving Certificate subject requirements to become a Home Support Worker, though subjects such as Biology, Home Economics, and SPHE provide a useful background. The typical entry route is a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Healthcare Support, offered by Colleges of Further Education (CFEs) across the country through ETBs. This one-year PLC course covers topics such as care skills, infection prevention, anatomy and physiology, and safety and health at work. Some workers enter through on-the-job training and complete the QQI Level 5 award part-time while employed. The HSE and many private home care providers fund or support staff in gaining this qualification. No statutory registration body currently regulates this role, though ongoing discussions around professionalisation of the sector may introduce formal registration requirements in the future.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Home Support Workers begin by completing a QQI Level 5 Healthcare Support course and taking up a part-time or full-time role with the HSE or a private home care provider. With experience, you may take on a senior care worker or team leader role, coordinating schedules and supporting newer colleagues. Furthering your education with a QQI Level 6 award or an NFQ Level 7/8 degree in Social Care, Nursing, or Health Services Management opens doors to roles such as Care Coordinator, Social Care Worker, or Healthcare Assistant in a residential or hospital setting. Some experienced workers pursue nursing through the NFQ Level 8 nursing degree programmes at Irish universities, registering with NMBI on qualification.

AI Impact on the job

AI has a limited direct impact on the hands-on personal care that defines this role, as the work depends on physical presence, human touch, and genuine interpersonal connection. Scheduling and route-planning software powered by AI is increasingly used by home care providers to manage carer timetables and client visits more efficiently, which affects how your working day is organised. Digital care management platforms are becoming common, allowing you to log visit notes and flag health changes electronically, which requires basic digital literacy. Overall, the core caring functions of this occupation are unlikely to be automated, keeping human workers central to service delivery for the foreseeable future.
