What will you learn?

This one-year PLC course prepares you to work as a healthcare support worker in a range of care settings across Ireland. You study subjects including anatomy and physiology, personal care skills, infection prevention, and safe moving and handling of patients. A significant part of the year involves supervised work placement in hospitals, nursing homes, or community care services, where you put your classroom learning into practice alongside qualified nurses and healthcare professionals. A typical week combines classroom theory, skills lab sessions practising clinical tasks such as taking vital signs, and reflective writing about your placement experiences. You also develop communication skills essential for supporting patients and their families in often challenging circumstances.

Required Education

Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied, though exact grade requirements vary by college and ETB. Most colleges look for passes in a minimum of five subjects, and experience in a caring role or volunteering can strengthen your application. QQI Level 4 awards are also accepted as an alternative entry route, making this course accessible if you did not complete the Leaving Certificate. There are no specific Higher Level subject requirements, though English and Biology are useful subjects to have studied. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly through the college without standard Leaving Certificate requirements. Many colleges offer this course free of charge or at low cost under FET funding, and HEAR and DARE supports may be available through the relevant ETB.

Career Prospects

Demand for healthcare support workers in Ireland remains strong and is expected to grow as the population ages and HSE services expand. Graduates typically find employment relatively quickly, with many securing positions directly through their placement providers. Starting salaries for healthcare assistants in the HSE are generally in the region of €28,000–€33,000 gross per year, with incremental pay scales in the public sector. Private sector roles may vary, but the overall employment outlook in this field is very positive.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is beginning to influence healthcare through tools such as automated patient monitoring systems, digital care planning software, and AI-assisted scheduling in home care. For healthcare support workers, these tools are likely to assist with administrative tasks and record-keeping rather than replace the hands-on personal care that defines the role. The human elements of this work — compassion, physical assistance, and emotional support — remain beyond the reach of current AI. Staying familiar with digital health record systems will become increasingly important as the HSE continues its rollout of electronic patient records.
