What does an Investment Analyst do?

As an Investment Analyst you research financial markets, companies, and economic trends to produce detailed reports and recommendations that guide fund managers and portfolio managers in their investment decisions. Your daily work involves analysing company financial statements, monitoring stock markets, tracking macroeconomic and political developments, and interpreting data from multiple sources to assess how these factors affect asset valuations. You may specialise in a particular sector — such as infrastructure, energy, banking, or retail — or focus on a specific asset class such as equities, fixed income, or alternative investments. You typically work within asset management firms, stockbrokers, investment banks, or treasury departments, collaborating closely with portfolio managers, traders, risk teams, and client relationship managers. Much of your output takes the form of written research notes, financial models, and formal investment recommendations presented to senior colleagues or investment committees.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Investment Analyst

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6:15 a.m. Before you leave the house, you have already checked overnight market moves in Asia and any news wires that broke while you slept. By 7:30 a.m. you are at your desk in your asset management firm's Dublin city centre office, pulling up Bloomberg terminals and reviewing the morning research notes that have arrived from brokers overnight. You scan earnings releases from European companies in the energy sector you cover and flag anything that could shift your valuation models. The first team meeting starts at 8:00 a.m. You present a brief update to the portfolio managers on a utilities company whose quarterly results landed this morning. You walk them through key figures — revenue, EBITDA, net debt — and explain whether the numbers support or challenge the price target you set three weeks ago. The conversation is quick but sharp; portfolio managers push back on your assumptions and you need to defend them clearly.

Required Education

A strong Leaving Certificate with higher-level Mathematics, Economics, and Business or Accounting provides an excellent foundation for entry into this field. Most Investment Analysts hold at least an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related discipline from institutions such as UCD, TCD, UCC, DCU, or TU Dublin. Many employers in Ireland's International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) and broader asset management sector expect or strongly prefer candidates who hold or are working towards an NFQ Level 9 Masters in Finance, Investment, or Financial Economics, or a postgraduate diploma in a relevant area. The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is widely regarded as the gold-standard professional qualification for this role and is increasingly treated as a near-requirement by leading Irish and international employers; completing all three CFA exam levels while working is the typical pathway. Some entrants join graduate programmes at large financial institutions immediately after an undergraduate degree and study for the CFA concurrently with their early career. There is no statutory registration body for investment analysts in Ireland, though membership of CFA Institute and adherence to its code of ethics is professionally expected.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Investment Analysts begin their careers on structured graduate programmes at asset managers, investment banks, or stockbroking firms — particularly those based in Dublin's IFSC — before taking on increasing responsibility for specific sectors or asset classes. As you build experience and progress through the CFA programme, you may move into a Senior Analyst role, producing independent research and mentoring junior colleagues. With several years of strong performance, progression to Portfolio Manager or Fund Manager is a natural next step, where you take direct responsibility for managing client assets. At the most senior levels, roles such as Head of Research, Chief Investment Officer, or Director of Asset Management become achievable, often requiring a combination of deep technical expertise, a strong investment track record, and leadership capability.

AI Impact on the job

Artificial intelligence is already transforming investment analysis by automating the extraction and initial processing of large volumes of financial data, news sentiment, and market signals that analysts previously had to gather manually. Routine screening of securities and basic financial modelling tasks are increasingly being handled by AI tools, freeing analysts to focus on higher-order judgement, qualitative assessment, and client communication. However, the interpretive, contextual, and ethical dimensions of investment decision-making — particularly in areas like ESG assessment, geopolitical risk, and complex structured products — continue to require experienced human analysts. Investment Analysts who develop strong data literacy and the ability to work alongside AI-driven tools are likely to be most competitive in the evolving Irish and international market.
