What will you learn?

A Biotechnology degree explores the application of biological systems and living organisms to develop products and processes across medicine, agriculture, food science, and environmental management. You study cell biology, molecular genetics, biochemistry, and bioprocessing, building a strong foundation in both laboratory science and industrial application. Practical laboratory work is central to every year, and most programmes include a paid industrial placement — often with major biopharma employers such as Pfizer, MSD, AstraZeneca, or Regeneron, many of whom operate large facilities in Ireland. In your final year you typically complete an independent research project. Some programmes offer Erasmus exchange opportunities at European partner universities.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO and typically requires a Leaving Certificate with at least six subjects, including English and a laboratory science subject such as Biology, Chemistry, or Physics at Higher level. Higher-level Maths is strongly recommended and may be required depending on the institution. CAO points for Biotechnology programmes at DCU, UCC, and University of Galway tend to be moderate to high, reflecting consistent demand from science-oriented students. If you do not meet direct entry requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET award in Science, Laboratory Science, or Biosciences can provide a progression route to Level 8. Mature students (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature entry route, and HEAR and DARE schemes support applicants from socioeconomically disadvantaged or disability backgrounds.

Career Prospects

Graduate prospects in Biotechnology are strong in Ireland, given the country's position as a leading global hub for biopharma and medical device manufacturing. Many graduates secure employment directly from their industrial placement year, with companies keen to retain students they have already trained. Demand for skilled graduates is expected to remain robust as existing multinationals expand and new companies establish Irish operations. Salaries for entry-level positions typically range from approximately €30,000 to €40,000 per year, with experienced scientists and those in regulatory or managerial roles earning considerably more.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being applied in biotechnology for drug discovery, genomic data analysis, and bioprocess optimisation, and you will likely encounter computational tools and data science methods during your studies. AI-driven platforms are accelerating the identification of therapeutic targets and speeding up clinical trial design, changing the nature of research roles. However, the hands-on laboratory, manufacturing, and quality assurance work that forms a major part of the sector remains highly dependent on skilled human professionals. Graduates who develop data literacy alongside their laboratory skills will be particularly well placed in an evolving industry.
