Transport & Logistics
As a Logistics Coordinator you plan, organise and oversee the movement of goods from suppliers through warehouses to customers, ensuring deliveries arrive on time, in the right quantities and at the lowest practical cost. Your day-to-day work involves scheduling shipments, liaising with hauliers, freight forwarders and customs agents, and tracking consignments through transport management systems. You monitor stock levels, coordinate with warehouse teams, and resolve any disruptions such as delays at Dublin Port, Shannon or Rosslare. You work closely with procurement, sales and finance colleagues, as well as external partners including carriers, third-party logistics providers and regulatory bodies.
Listen: a day as a Logistics Coordinator
Your alarm goes off at 7:00 a.m. Before you even leave the house, you check your phone for any overnight alerts from your transport management system. A container bound for Dublin Port has been flagged as delayed — the ferry from Cherbourg ran four hours late. You make a mental note to call the customs agent first thing. You arrive at the distribution centre outside Naas at 8:15 a.m. and open your inbox to find forty-three unread emails. You prioritise quickly: two hauliers need collection confirmations for this afternoon, a supplier in Cork is querying a short-delivery from last week, and the warehouse supervisor wants to know when the delayed French shipment will clear customs. You ring the customs agent, confirm the revised estimated time of arrival, and update the delivery schedule on the company's SAP system.

Logistics Associate Apprenticeship
CareersPortal
A Leaving Certificate with subjects such as Business, Mathematics and Geography provides a strong foundation for this career. Many entrants pursue a Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Logistics or International Business at institutions such as TU Dublin, ATU, SETU or University of Galway. The Logistics Associate apprenticeship (NFQ Level 6), offered through SOLAS and apprenticeship.ie, is a recognised earn-and-learn route that combines on-the-job training with academic study and is increasingly popular with school leavers. PLC courses in Business, Supply Chain or Freight & Logistics at NFQ Level 5 or 6 are available through Colleges of Further Education and can also serve as a pathway into higher education via CAO. Professional membership of bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Ireland enhances career prospects and is often pursued alongside or after initial qualifications. Post-Brexit customs regulations have made knowledge of import/export compliance and Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) procedures particularly valuable.
Most people begin in junior logistics or distribution administration roles, gaining hands-on experience with freight documentation, order processing and transport scheduling. With a few years of experience, progression to Logistics Coordinator or Senior Logistics Executive is typical, with responsibility for managing specific lanes, suppliers or customer accounts. Further advancement can lead to roles such as Logistics Manager, Supply Chain Manager or Head of Operations, often requiring a combination of proven results and a relevant postgraduate qualification such as an NFQ Level 9 diploma or master's. In Ireland, multinational companies in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, technology, retail and food manufacturing offer particularly strong progression opportunities.
AI and automation are transforming logistics through route optimisation algorithms, predictive demand forecasting and automated warehouse management systems, reducing manual data entry and improving delivery accuracy. Logistics Coordinators are increasingly expected to interpret AI-generated insights and act on them rather than performing repetitive scheduling tasks manually. However, the need for human judgement in managing supplier relationships, resolving exceptions and navigating regulatory complexity means the role is evolving rather than disappearing. Professionals who can combine operational know-how with digital literacy and data interpretation skills will be best placed in this changing environment.
