What does a Garage Manager do?

As a Garage Manager you oversee the day-to-day running of a motor vehicle repair and service centre, whether that is a franchised dealership or an independent garage. You plan workshop schedules, allocate jobs to technicians, and ensure vehicles are diagnosed, repaired, and returned to customers on time and to a high standard. You deal directly with customers, handling queries, estimates, and complaints, while also managing relationships with parts suppliers and keeping stock levels in order. You are responsible for the performance of your team, including mechanics, service advisors, and administrative staff, and you monitor workshop efficiency, labour productivity, and profitability.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Garage Manager

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 7:15 a.m. You are at the garage by 7:45, well before most of the team arrives. You use that quiet time to check the job cards on the workshop management system — Automaster is common in Irish garages — and confirm which vehicles are booked in for the day. There are twelve jobs on the board, ranging from routine NCT pre-checks and oil services to a diesel particulate filter fault on a 2021 Volkswagen Transporter. By 8:00 the workshop is filling up. You hold a brief stand-up with your four technicians and the service advisor, assigning jobs based on each person's skill set and the ramps available. One of the mechanics flags that a parts order from the distributor in Dublin has not arrived, so you are on the phone to the supplier before half eight, chasing an ETA and deciding whether to reschedule the affected customer.

Required Education

There is no single mandatory qualification to become a Garage Manager in Ireland, but most employers expect a strong background in the motor industry combined with supervisory experience. Completing the SOLAS Light Vehicle Mechanic or Heavy Vehicle Mechanic apprenticeship (NFQ Level 6) is a very common and respected route into the trade, providing the hands-on technical foundation the role demands. A QQI Level 5 or 6 award in Motor Vehicle Technology or Automotive Engineering from a College of Further Education can also provide a useful starting point. Some managers progress through a Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Automotive Management, Business Management, or Engineering at a technological university such as TU Dublin, ATU, or SETU, which strengthens the business and financial management side of the role. Short courses in management, customer service, and health and safety (such as Safe Pass or manual handling) are expected as part of ongoing professional development. Membership of relevant industry bodies such as the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) is advantageous and helps managers stay current with regulatory and technical changes.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Garage Managers begin their careers on the workshop floor as apprentice mechanics or service advisors, building technical expertise and customer-facing skills over several years. With experience, they may move into a senior technician or service advisor role before stepping up to an assistant manager or workshop controller position. Promotion to Garage Manager typically follows a proven track record in team leadership and business performance, and further progression can lead to roles such as Dealer Principal, Regional Operations Manager, or ownership of an independent garage. Some experienced managers also move into fleet management, automotive parts distribution, or roles with vehicle manufacturers and importers.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered diagnostic tools and workshop management software are already changing how Garage Managers operate, automating vehicle health reporting, job costing, and parts ordering processes. Predictive maintenance platforms can alert customers to upcoming issues before they become serious, shifting the garage's role towards proactive servicing rather than purely reactive repairs. However, the interpersonal, supervisory, and problem-solving aspects of the Garage Manager's role are not easily automated, and human judgement remains essential in managing staff, handling complex customer situations, and adapting to unexpected technical challenges. Managers who embrace digital tools and upskill in EV and connected-vehicle technology will be best positioned for the future.
