As a Management Consultant you advise organisations on strategy, operational efficiency, and change management, helping them solve complex business problems and improve performance. Your daily work involves gathering and analysing data, conducting interviews with client staff, facilitating workshops, and presenting findings and recommendations to senior decision-makers. In a healthcare consulting context, you may also advise health service providers and government bodies on policy implementation, patient care improvements, and resource allocation. You typically work in project teams alongside other consultants, data analysts, and client personnel, often across multiple industries or specialisms simultaneously. The role is fast-paced and varied, with frequent travel to client sites and tight project deadlines.
Listen: a day as a Management Consultant
You are up at half six and on the DART by half seven, laptop bag over your shoulder and a coffee in hand. Your current project is a twelve-week engagement with a large hospital group in Dublin, helping them reduce waiting times in their outpatient clinics. Before you reach the client site you check your emails and review the agenda for the day on Microsoft Teams. Your project manager has flagged that the steering committee presentation, originally scheduled for Friday, has been moved to tomorrow afternoon, which immediately reshuffles everything you had planned. By nine o'clock you are in a meeting room at the hospital, interviewing two senior nurses and an administrative manager about how appointments are currently scheduled. You take detailed notes in OneNote and ask careful, open questions, trying not to lead them toward conclusions you have already formed. These conversations are at the core of the work; the real picture rarely matches what the official process documents say.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
Most Management Consultants enter the profession with at least an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree, typically in Business, Economics, Finance, Commerce, or a related field from institutions such as UCD, TCD, UCC, University of Galway, or TU Dublin. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Mathematics, Economics, Business, and Accounting provide a strong foundation, as does a good command of English for report writing and presentations. Postgraduate qualifications at NFQ Level 9, such as an MBA or a Master's in Management or Business Analytics, are increasingly common and can accelerate progression into senior roles. Some consultants also hold professional qualifications from bodies such as Chartered Accountants Ireland, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), or the Project Management Institute. There is no statutory registration body for management consultants in Ireland, though membership of the Management Consultancies Association or similar bodies adds professional credibility.
Most Management Consultants begin as Analysts or Junior Consultants in a graduate programme, typically with one of the Big Four firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) or a boutique consultancy based in Dublin. After two to four years, strong performers progress to Consultant and then Senior Consultant level, taking on greater client responsibility and beginning to lead workstreams. Further advancement leads to Manager and Principal roles, where you oversee entire project teams and develop client relationships. The most experienced consultants progress to Partner or Director level, responsible for winning new business and shaping the firm's strategic direction.
Artificial intelligence is automating many of the data-gathering, benchmarking, and report-drafting tasks that were previously time-consuming parts of junior consultant work. AI-powered tools can now rapidly analyse large datasets, identify performance gaps, and generate initial strategy frameworks, shifting the consultant's focus towards interpretation, creative problem-solving, and client relationships. This means strong human judgement, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills are becoming even more important than purely technical analytical ability. Consultants who can effectively leverage AI tools while providing nuanced, contextualised advice will be most competitive in the evolving market.
