As a Podcast Producer you plan, record and edit podcast series for a wide range of clients, including media organisations, brands, charities and public bodies. You are responsible for developing episode concepts, booking and briefing guests, managing recording sessions, and editing audio to a broadcast-ready standard. Day-to-day work involves scripting, sound design, mixing, writing show notes and managing publication schedules across platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other streaming services. You work closely with presenters, content strategists, marketing teams and commissioning editors to ensure each series meets its creative and commercial objectives.
Listen: a day as a Podcast Producer
Your alarm goes off at 7.30 am. Before you leave the house you check your email on your phone and notice a guest you booked for Friday has cancelled. You flag it mentally and head into the office, a mid-sized production company based in Dublin's docklands that produces podcasts for corporate clients, NGOs and a couple of national media outlets. By 9.00 am you are at your desk with a coffee, opening Trello to review the week's board. Three series are in production simultaneously: a six-part history series for a heritage charity, a branded finance podcast for a credit union, and a true-crime series commissioned by an online media outlet. You spend the first hour ringing potential replacement guests for Friday, working through a spreadsheet of contacts, leaving voicemails and sending polite follow-up emails.
A Level 7 or Level 8 degree in a relevant field such as Media Production, Broadcast Media, Journalism, Communications or Audio Engineering provides the most direct route into this occupation. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include English, Music, Business, and any creative or technology subjects. TU Dublin, DCU, UL, ATU and IADT offer relevant undergraduate programmes in media, journalism and audio production. A QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC course in Media Production or Sound Engineering at a College of Further Education can also provide a practical entry route, with progression to degree level possible thereafter. A postgraduate diploma or master's at Level 9 in areas such as Digital Media or Audio Production can be an advantage for those seeking more senior roles in larger organisations. There is no statutory professional registration body for podcast producers, though building a strong portfolio of published work is essential for career progression.
Many Podcast Producers begin their careers in related roles such as radio production assistant, content creator or audio editor, often gaining experience through student media, internships or freelance work while studying. With a few years of experience producing and publishing content, you can move into a senior producer role with greater editorial responsibility or manage a team of producers within a media company or agency. Some producers specialise in particular genres such as documentary, branded content or news, while others move into broader roles such as Head of Audio or Content Director within media organisations or large brands. Freelancing is also a well-established route in Ireland, with many experienced producers building a client base across the media, corporate and public sector landscapes.
AI tools are already transforming podcast production workflows, with automated transcription services, AI-assisted audio clean-up and noise reduction, and text-to-speech tools significantly reducing the time spent on routine editing tasks. Producers who embrace these tools can work more efficiently, handling larger volumes of content or dedicating more time to creative development and guest management. However, the distinctly human skills of editorial judgement, storytelling, relationship-building with contributors and creative concept development remain central to the role and are not easily replicated by AI. Producers who develop strong skills in both creative direction and AI-assisted production tools will be best positioned to thrive as the industry continues to evolve.
