What will you learn?

Applied Social Studies at QQI Level 5 is a one-year PLC course offered by Colleges of Further Education across Ireland, designed to give you a grounding in the theory and practice of social care and community work. You study topics such as human development, social policy, psychology, and child protection, building an understanding of how social issues affect individuals and communities. A significant portion of the course involves supervised work placement, typically in settings such as residential care, community organisations, youth services, or disability services, giving you direct experience of frontline social care work. Alongside placement, a typical week includes classroom-based learning, group projects, reflective journals, and skills workshops. The course suits those who want to move into social care, community development, or early years work, or who wish to progress to a higher education programme in social science or social care.

Required Education

Entry to QQI Level 5 Applied Social Studies typically requires a Leaving Certificate, though some colleges accept applicants who have completed Junior Cycle or an equivalent qualification alongside relevant life or work experience. There are no fixed minimum points requirements as this is a FET award rather than a CAO-points course, but you will usually need to demonstrate suitability through an application form and sometimes an interview. Leaving Certificate subjects such as English, Home Economics, Biology, Religious Education, or SPHE are considered useful preparation, though no specific Higher-level subjects are usually mandatory at this level. Mature applicants aged 23 or over, or those who did not complete the Leaving Certificate, are commonly accepted based on relevant experience or motivation. Completion of this QQI Level 5 award with a Merit or Distinction in core modules is the primary route for progression to Level 6, Level 7, or Level 8 programmes in social care, social science, or applied social studies through the CAO's supplemental admissions processes.

Career Prospects

Demand for social care and community support workers in Ireland remains consistently strong, driven by an ageing population, expanding disability services, and ongoing investment by the HSE and Tusla. Entry-level roles as a Social Care Assistant or Support Worker typically offer gross salaries in the region of €28,000–€34,000 per year, with higher earnings possible for those who progress to qualified Social Care Worker status through further education. The sector is regulated by CORU, meaning that graduates who progress to degree level and register as Social Care Workers have a clear professional pathway with better pay and job security. The QQI Level 5 award alone is sufficient for many support roles, but degree-level qualification is increasingly expected for senior positions.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are beginning to appear in administrative and case-management systems used by social care organisations, for example in scheduling, report generation, and data analysis. However, the core work of a social care practitioner — building trusting relationships, responding to emotional and complex human needs, and exercising professional judgement — is not easily replicated by AI. At this level of study, you are unlikely to encounter AI tools directly in your coursework, though digital literacy and record-keeping skills are increasingly important. The human-centred nature of social care means employment in this field is considered relatively resilient to automation.
