This course trains you in the practical and scientific aspects of tree care, from planting and establishment through to felling and specialist climbing techniques. You will study tree biology, soil science, pest and disease identification, and learn how to carry out professional tree assessments and risk evaluations. A significant portion of your time is spent outdoors, working with equipment such as chainsaws, aerial rigging systems, and climbing gear, and you will work towards industry-recognised chainsaw tickets and safe-pass certification. Placements with local authorities, utility companies, or tree surgery contractors give you real-world experience working to professional standards. A typical week might combine classroom-based plant science with hands-on climbing sessions and machinery maintenance.

Forestry in Teagasc – what we do
Entry to a QQI Level 6 Arboriculture programme typically requires a Leaving Certificate or equivalent, though many providers admit students on the basis of relevant work experience or a QQI Level 5 horticulture or agriculture qualification. There are no strict Higher-level subject requirements, though Biology, Agricultural Science, or Geography can be useful foundations. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) are welcomed and assessed on experience and motivation. Some Teagasc colleges may require a medical fitness declaration given the physically demanding nature of climbing and chainsaw work. ETB-based applicants may apply through the college directly or via Qualifax and Fetchcourses.
Demand for qualified arborists in Ireland is steady and growing, driven by urban tree management requirements, ageing tree stock in public parks, and stringent health and safety legislation requiring certified practitioners. Graduates holding chainsaw tickets and a QQI Level 6 award are viewed favourably by employers and can expect to find employment relatively quickly after qualifying. Entry-level salaries typically range from around €28,000 to €35,000 per year, with experienced climbing arborists and tree inspectors earning €40,000 or more. Self-employment and contracting are also viable options for those with a few years of experience.
AI-assisted tools are beginning to appear in tree risk assessment, with software platforms using aerial drone imagery and LiDAR data to help identify structural defects and canopy health issues. However, the hands-on, physically demanding nature of climbing, pruning, and felling means that the core practical skills of an arborist remain firmly human-led. You will benefit from learning to use digital tree management databases and inspection apps, which are increasingly used by local authorities to record and schedule tree works. AI is a useful support tool in this field rather than a replacement for skilled practitioners.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
How to apply
QQI Level 6 Arboriculture programmes are FET/PLC courses with no CAO code; applicants apply directly to the college, ETB or Teagasc campus, typically requiring a QQI Level 5 in a related discipline (e.g. horticulture, agriculture) or relevant work experience. Some programmes are delivered part-time or through blended learning and may be listed on fetchcourses.ie.
