As a Forestry Technician you monitor the health, growth, and productivity of woodlands and forests, carrying out regular surveys and inspections across managed sites. You plan and oversee tree planting programmes, thinning operations, and pest or disease control measures, working closely with forest owners, contractors, and environmental agencies. Your day-to-day work involves writing technical reports, ensuring compliance with forestry regulations and environmental legislation, and maintaining accurate records of forest inventories. You may work for state bodies such as Coillte or Teagasc, for private forestry management companies, or as a self-employed consultant advising landowners on afforestation grants and sustainable woodland management.
Listen: a day as a Forestry Technician
Your alarm goes off at 6:45 on a Tuesday morning in late October. You are based in Roscommon, working for a private forestry management company. After a quick breakfast, you load your van with a clinometer for measuring tree heights, a diameter tape, marking paint, your field tablet, and a paper map of today's sites. You are on the road by 7:30, heading for a Sitka spruce plantation near Strokestown that is due for its first thinning operation. You arrive at the forest gate just after 8:15. The ground is soft after two days of rain, so you pull on your chainsaw-rated trousers, steel-toecap boots, and a hi-vis vest before you start. Your first task is to walk a series of marked sample plots, recording the diameter and height of selected trees on your field tablet using a forestry inventory app. The data feeds into a yield table that will tell you how many cubic metres of timber the contractor can expect to harvest. It is methodical, muddy work, and by 10:00 your gloves are already soaked.

Forestry in Teagasc – what we do
Teagasc
Leaving Certificate subjects such as Biology, Agricultural Science, Geography, and Mathematics provide a strong foundation for this career. The most direct route is a Level 7 Bachelor of Science in Forestry or a Level 8 Honours Bachelor in Forestry, available at SETU Waterford and ATU Sligo. Some entrants begin with a Level 5 or Level 6 QQI award in Agriculture or Horticulture through a PLC course in a College of Further Education before progressing to a higher education programme. Teagasc also offers related programmes in land-based studies that can serve as entry points. Professional membership of organisations such as the Society of Irish Foresters is valued by employers, and those working on grant-aided afforestation schemes must typically be registered as approved foresters with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
Many Forestry Technicians begin their careers in field roles with Coillte, private forestry management companies, or through the Forest Service of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, carrying out surveys and supporting senior foresters. With several years of experience you typically progress to managing your own portfolio of client sites, overseeing afforestation and thinning contracts independently. Further advancement may lead to senior consultancy roles, forest management positions, or specialist areas such as biodiversity, carbon accounting, or timber procurement. Some experienced professionals move into policy, education, or research roles with bodies such as Teagasc or higher education institutions.
AI-powered drone surveying and remote sensing technology are increasingly used to monitor forest health, detect disease outbreaks, and measure timber volumes far more efficiently than traditional ground surveys alone. Predictive modelling tools driven by machine learning are beginning to assist foresters in forecasting pest risks and optimising planting densities based on soil and climate data. However, the hands-on, site-specific nature of forestry work — including physical inspections, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory compliance — means that human expertise remains central to the role. Forestry Technicians who develop digital skills alongside their ecological knowledge will be well placed to use these tools to enhance their productivity and the quality of their management plans.
