What will you learn?

Studying Archaeology at degree level introduces you to the human past through excavation, artefact analysis, landscape survey and historical records. You will learn to read the physical evidence left by past societies, from prehistoric monuments and medieval settlements to post-medieval industrial remains. Modules combine classroom theory with practical fieldwork, including supervised excavation on real sites, geophysical survey and finds processing. Many programmes include an Erasmus exchange opportunity, placing you on digs across Europe. A typical week might involve a lecture on Iron Age Ireland in the morning, a laboratory session examining pottery sherds in the afternoon, and time spent writing up field notes or GIS mapping exercises.

Required Education

Entry is normally through the CAO, and a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including English is required. Higher-level Irish or English and a humanity or science subject are advantageous, and some programmes prefer or require a laboratory or geography background. CAO points for Archaeology programmes at UCD, UCC and University of Galway are generally moderate, though combined Arts entry routes may vary. Applicants holding a QQI Level 5 or 6 award in a relevant area such as Heritage Studies or Social Science may apply through the FET/QQI links process as an alternative route. Mature students aged 23 or over can apply directly to institutions without meeting standard Leaving Cert requirements, and HEAR and DARE schemes support applicants from disadvantaged or disability backgrounds.

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified field archaeologists in Ireland remains relatively steady, driven by large-scale infrastructure investment under programmes such as the National Development Plan 2021–2030, which requires licensed archaeological monitoring and excavation before and during construction. Entry-level salaries for commercial field archaeologists typically range from approximately €28,000 to €35,000 gross per year, rising with experience and specialist skills. Progression to project management or heritage consultancy roles can bring salaries of €45,000 or above. Competition for permanent State and academic posts is strong, and many graduates build careers across both the commercial and public sectors.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly used in archaeology for remote sensing, satellite image analysis and the automated classification of LiDAR data to identify hidden features in the landscape. AI-assisted tools can speed up the processing of large finds databases and support predictive modelling of site locations. However, the hands-on work of excavation, site interpretation and regulatory compliance remains firmly human-led, particularly given Ireland's strict licensing requirements under the National Monuments Act. You will benefit from learning to use these digital tools alongside traditional fieldwork skills.
