What will you learn?

Studying architecture at degree level in Ireland involves developing skills in design thinking, technical construction knowledge, environmental sustainability, and architectural history and theory. You will spend a significant portion of your time in design studios, working through briefs that progress from small-scale interventions to complex urban projects. Alongside studio work, you cover structural engineering principles, building technology, environmental systems, and planning law. Many programmes include study-abroad opportunities through Erasmus+ partnerships, and work placements are embedded within the five-year structure, giving you real office experience before you graduate. A typical week combines studio critiques, lectures in technology and history, and independent design development, meaning no two weeks look quite the same.

Required Education

Entry to an NFQ Level 8 architecture degree in Ireland typically requires a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects, including English and usually Mathematics at Ordinary level or above, though Higher-level Maths strengthens your application considerably. CAO points for architecture at UCD, TU Dublin, University of Limerick, and through the Cork Centre for Architectural Education (UCC/MTU) are generally competitive to high, reflecting strong demand for places. Notably, UCD and TU Dublin do not require a portfolio at the application stage, making access more straightforward than at some international schools. QQI Level 5 or 6 FET awards in Art and Design or Construction Studies can provide a progression route for applicants without the traditional Leaving Certificate profile. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature-student CAO pathway, and the HEAR and DARE access schemes support students from socioeconomic or disability backgrounds. Art, Design & Communication Graphics, Physics, and Construction Studies at Leaving Cert are all useful supporting subjects.

Career Prospects

The outlook for architecture graduates in Ireland is generally positive, underpinned by sustained demand for housing, commercial development, and public infrastructure investment. Salaries for architectural assistants typically range from around €30,000 to €40,000 gross per year, rising to €55,000–€80,000 or beyond for chartered architects with experience or leadership roles. Ireland's ongoing housing crisis and large-scale infrastructure programmes mean that architects with skills in sustainable design and housing delivery are particularly sought after. Many graduates also pursue opportunities in the UK, Europe, and further afield, as the RIAI qualification is internationally recognised.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping architectural practice, particularly through generative design tools that can rapidly produce and evaluate multiple design options based on site and performance criteria. AI-assisted platforms are being integrated into Building Information Modelling (BIM) workflows, automating elements of documentation, energy analysis, and clash detection. As a student, you will be expected to engage critically with these tools rather than simply use them, understanding their limitations in relation to creativity, context, and ethics. Core design thinking, site analysis, and client communication skills remain distinctly human competencies that AI is unlikely to replace.

How to apply

Applications for CAO undergraduate architecture programmes are made through the CAO (cao.ie) by 1 February each year, with a closing date of 1 May for late applications. Entry requirements typically include a strong Leaving Certificate performance with Mathematics and English, and some programmes require a design portfolio or interview at later stages.
