As an Architectural Technologist you translate the design ideas of architects and engineers into detailed technical drawings, plans, and specifications used to construct buildings. Your day-to-day work involves producing precise drawings using CAD and Building Information Modelling (BIM) software, as well as interpreting planning regulations, building codes, and zoning requirements. You collaborate closely with architects, structural engineers, contractors, and clients to ensure that designs are both technically sound and legally compliant. On larger projects you may visit construction sites to check that work matches the approved drawings and to resolve any technical queries that arise on the ground.
Listen: a day as an Architectural Technologist
You arrive at your practice's open-plan office in Cork city at half eight, make a coffee, and open Revit — the Building Information Modelling software your team uses on all live projects. Before nine o'clock you are already reviewing the model for a three-storey residential development in Ballincollig, checking that the floor plans, sections and elevations are consistent after yesterday's design change to the stairwell layout. At half nine your senior architect drops by your desk to go through a set of comments received from Cork City Council's planning department. You work through each point together, noting which amendments require updated drawings and which can be addressed in a written response. You spend the rest of the morning redlining the relevant sheets in AutoCAD and updating the Revit model to reflect revised window positions on the front elevation.

AU343 - Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Architectural Technology
ATU Donegal
A Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Architectural Technology is the most common route into this career; programmes are offered at TU Dublin, ATU, MTU, and SETU, and typically require Leaving Certificate subjects such as Construction Studies, Technical Graphics, Mathematics, and Physics. Some graduates go on to complete a Level 9 postgraduate qualification to deepen their expertise in BIM, sustainable design, or project management. A QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC course in Architectural Drafting or Construction Technology can provide a pathway into the degree programmes via the Higher Education Links Scheme or Advanced Entry. Professional membership of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) is highly regarded by Irish employers and demonstrates competence and commitment to professional standards; full membership is attained after a period of supervised practice following graduation.
Most Architectural Technologists begin their careers as junior or graduate technologists in architectural practices, construction companies, or local authority planning departments, working under the supervision of senior colleagues. With three to five years of experience, you typically advance to a mid-level role, taking on greater responsibility for managing drawing packages and liaising directly with contractors and clients on site. Senior Architectural Technologists often lead project teams, manage junior staff, and take ownership of the full technical delivery of construction projects. With further experience or postgraduate study, some move into roles such as BIM Manager, Project Manager, or Facilities Manager, or set up their own consultancy practice.
AI-powered design tools are beginning to automate routine aspects of drafting, such as generating standard building components, checking drawings for regulatory compliance, and producing preliminary layouts from brief inputs. This is likely to reduce time spent on repetitive tasks, freeing Architectural Technologists to focus on more complex technical problem-solving and client-facing work. BIM platforms are increasingly integrating machine learning features that can detect clashes between building systems and suggest design optimisations automatically. However, the contextual judgement, site knowledge, and regulatory expertise required of a skilled Architectural Technologist mean that human oversight remains essential throughout the design and construction process.
