What will you learn?

This QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Early Learning and Care prepares you to work as a room leader or senior practitioner in early childhood settings such as crèches, Montessori schools, naíonraí, and after-school services. You study child development theory, curriculum frameworks, and the national quality standards that govern childcare in Ireland. Practical placement in a registered early years setting is a major component, typically taking up two days per week, giving you hands-on experience planning and leading learning experiences for children aged 0–6. Your studies are framed around Aistear (the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework), Síolta (the National Quality Framework), and Tusla's regulatory requirements. A typical week combines classroom sessions in child psychology and special educational needs with portfolio work and reflective practice from your placement.

Required Education

Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of five passes (O6/H7 or higher), including English; some colleges also look for passes in a science or social-care related subject. Higher-level English is advantageous given the reflective writing and portfolio demands of the course. Candidates who hold a QQI Level 5 Major Award in Early Learning and Care or Childcare are particularly well placed and may gain direct entry or advanced entry to the Level 6 programme. Mature applicants (23 or over) can apply without formal Leaving Certificate qualifications and are assessed on relevant work experience, a personal statement, or interview. HEAR and DARE schemes may also support access for applicants from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities. Garda vetting is mandatory before commencing placement in any early years setting.

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified early years professionals in Ireland remains strong, driven by the Government's National Childcare Scheme, Core Funding, and the continued expansion of the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) programme. The sector has a persistent shortage of room-leader qualified staff, so graduates generally find employment relatively quickly. Salaries for room leaders in Core Funded settings are linked to the published Haddington Road-aligned pay scales, with graduate room leaders typically earning in the range of €28,000–€35,000 gross per year, with incremental increases over time. Career progression into management or coordination roles is realistic, particularly with further study.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is beginning to appear in administrative and documentation tools used in early years settings, such as automated observation recording apps and scheduling software, which can reduce paperwork for practitioners. However, the relational, care-focused, and regulatory nature of early childhood education means that direct AI substitution of the practitioner role is very limited. You will still be expected to develop nuanced, child-led practice grounded in Aistear and Síolta that cannot be replicated by technology. Familiarity with digital learning platforms and online child-development portfolios is increasingly useful, and some CPD in digital literacy for early years practice is becoming common.
