What does a Validation Engineer do?

As a Validation Engineer you design, execute and document the formal testing processes that confirm manufacturing equipment, systems and software perform correctly and consistently within regulated parameters. In Ireland, this role is strongly associated with the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and medical device sectors, where you prepare and execute validation protocols — Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ) and Performance Qualification (PQ) — to satisfy regulators such as the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) and the US FDA. You work closely with process engineers, quality assurance teams, project managers and regulatory affairs specialists to ensure that every piece of equipment or computerised system is fit for its intended purpose before it enters live production. Day-to-day tasks include writing validation plans and reports, reviewing engineering drawings, performing risk assessments and maintaining detailed documentation that can withstand regulatory audit.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Validation Engineer

0:00 / 2:36

Your alarm goes off at 6:45 am. You work at a biopharmaceutical manufacturing site in Leinster, so you are at your desk in the engineering office by 8:00 am. You begin by checking your email for any overnight updates from the quality assurance team and scanning the deviation log — a formal record of anything that did not go as planned on the production floor the previous day. There is a minor deviation linked to a piece of filling equipment you are currently validating, so you flag it immediately and add a note to the relevant validation protocol. By 9:00 am you are in a cross-functional meeting with a process engineer, a QA specialist and a project manager. The three of you are preparing for an Operational Qualification — an OQ — on a new autoclave, which is a high-pressure sterilisation unit. An OQ confirms that the equipment operates correctly across its full intended range of conditions. You review the draft test scripts together, checking that every acceptance criterion is traceable back to the equipment's User Requirements Specification.

Required Education

A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree is the typical minimum requirement, with relevant disciplines including Chemical Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or Pharmaceutical Science; these are offered at universities such as UCD, UCC, University of Galway, UL and TU Dublin. Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology, and Higher Level Mathematics in particular is highly valued for technical programmes. Some graduates enter the field through Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor programmes and then progress via Springboard+ or employer-funded upskilling to meet industry expectations. A postgraduate diploma or Level 9 Masters in Quality, Regulatory Affairs or Pharmaceutical Technology is increasingly common for those seeking senior validation roles or to move into regulatory affairs. There is no statutory professional registration body specifically for validation engineers in Ireland, though membership of Engineers Ireland and familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) frameworks such as GAMP 5 are strongly regarded by employers. Continuous professional development is essential given the evolving regulatory landscape governed by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and FDA guidance documents.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Validation Engineers begin their careers as junior or graduate validation engineers, often on rotational graduate programmes with large multinational biopharmaceutical companies such as those based in Cork, Dublin or Limerick. After three to five years of hands-on experience, you would typically progress to a Senior Validation Engineer role, taking ownership of complex projects and mentoring junior colleagues. From there, pathways lead towards Validation Lead, CQV (Commissioning, Qualification and Validation) Manager or Quality Assurance Manager positions, with some engineers moving into regulatory affairs or project management. A Level 9 qualification or chartered engineer status through Engineers Ireland can accelerate progression into leadership or specialist consultancy roles.

AI Impact on the job

AI and machine learning tools are beginning to assist Validation Engineers by automating the analysis of large datasets generated during qualification testing, flagging anomalies and accelerating report generation. Computerised system validation is also evolving, with guidance such as GAMP 5 second edition recognising the role of automated testing tools and risk-based approaches that reduce manual effort for lower-risk systems. However, regulatory bodies still require human accountability for validation decisions, meaning that critical judgement, authorship of protocols and interpretation of results remain firmly within the engineer's remit. Engineers who develop competence in data integrity frameworks, CSV (Computer System Validation) and emerging digital validation tools will be best placed as the industry evolves.
