What will you learn?

This degree focuses on the science behind human movement, physical fitness, and health promotion. You study exercise physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, and the psychology of physical activity, gaining a thorough understanding of how the body responds and adapts to exercise. Practical laboratory work is central to the programme — you will assess clients' fitness levels, analyse movement, and design evidence-based exercise programmes for diverse populations, including older adults, those with chronic conditions, and athletes. Many programmes include a supervised clinical or industry placement in settings such as leisure centres, community health projects, or cardiac rehabilitation units. A typical week combines lectures, lab sessions, and small-group tutorials, with increasing independent research as you progress through the four years.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO and typically requires a minimum of six Leaving Certificate subjects, including passes in English and Mathematics. Higher-level Biology or Physical Education is advantageous, as these underpin the scientific content of the course. CAO points for this programme are generally moderate to high, reflecting consistent demand. If you do not meet the direct entry requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC award in Sport and Recreation or Health Science can provide a progression route into Year 1 or Year 2, depending on the institution. Mature students aged 23 or over may apply through the mature entry route and are assessed on motivation and relevant experience. HEAR and DARE access schemes are also available at both SETU and UL for eligible applicants.

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified exercise and health professionals in Ireland has grown steadily, driven by increased awareness of lifestyle-related illness and government investment in preventive health. Graduates with a Level 8 degree are well positioned to enter clinical exercise referral schemes and health service roles that require higher academic qualifications. Starting salaries in the sector typically range from approximately €28,000 to €35,000 per year, with experienced practitioners or those in clinical roles earning considerably more. The growth of corporate wellness and community-based physical activity programmes continues to open new employment pathways.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is beginning to influence how exercise professionals assess and monitor clients, with wearable technology and AI-driven platforms providing real-time data on heart rate, movement quality, and recovery. As a graduate, you will need to interpret and critically evaluate data generated by these tools rather than simply rely on automated recommendations. AI may streamline administrative tasks such as programme planning and progress reporting, freeing practitioners to focus on client interaction and complex decision-making. However, the human-centred, relationship-based nature of health and fitness work means that personal expertise and interpersonal skills remain essential and difficult to automate.
