What will you learn?

Mental Health Nursing prepares you to support people experiencing a wide range of psychiatric and psychological conditions, from anxiety and depression to psychosis and personality disorders. You study the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of mental illness alongside therapeutic communication, risk assessment, and recovery-focused care. Practical clinical placements — arranged through the HSE and approved mental health services — form a central part of every year, giving you hands-on experience in inpatient wards, community mental health teams, and specialist services such as CAMHS and forensic psychiatry. A typical week combines lectures and skills-lab sessions on campus with supervised clinical hours in placement settings. Some programmes offer Erasmus exchange opportunities to study mental health approaches in other European countries. You graduate as a qualified mental health nurse, ready for immediate registration and practice.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO, and points are typically very high given the strong demand for places on this programme. You generally need to meet the standard Leaving Certificate minimum entry requirements, which include at least six subjects with a grade in English or Irish at Ordinary or Higher level; Higher Level Biology or another science subject is strongly advantageous and may be required by some institutions. QQI/FET Level 5 Health Service Skills or related awards provide a recognised progression route for applicants who do not enter directly from Leaving Certificate. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature student entry pathway and may be invited to interview. HEAR and DARE access schemes support students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities. All successful applicants are subject to Garda vetting and a satisfactory occupational health assessment before commencing clinical placement.

Career Prospects

Mental health nursing is one of the most in-demand nursing specialisms in Ireland, with significant shortages of qualified practitioners across HSE and private services. Graduate employment rates are consistently very high, and newly registered mental health nurses typically secure posts quickly after NMBI registration. Starting salaries as a Staff Nurse in the HSE are set by public-sector pay scales, generally in the region of €35,000–€40,000 gross per annum, rising substantially with experience and specialist roles. The growing national focus on mental health funding and service expansion — including under Sharing the Vision policy — means long-term career stability and development prospects are strong.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is beginning to influence mental health services through predictive risk-assessment tools, AI-assisted triage platforms, and digital mental health apps that support between-appointment care. As a mental health nurse, you will increasingly need to evaluate digital therapeutics and understand how AI tools interact with clinical decision-making. However, the fundamentally human, relationship-based nature of mental health nursing means AI is far more likely to augment your practice than replace it. Critical thinking about ethical issues — such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the limits of automated tools — will form a growing part of professional training and continuing education.
