What will you learn?

Applied Psychology at bachelor level introduces you to the scientific study of human behaviour, mental processes, and social interaction. You explore core areas such as cognitive, developmental, social, and biological psychology, alongside research methods and statistics. Many programmes include modules in health psychology, organisational psychology, or counselling skills, allowing you to develop a practical specialisation. A typical week combines lectures, small-group tutorials, and laboratory or research practicals where you design studies and analyse data. Work placements in community, health, or organisational settings are often built into the degree, and some programmes offer Erasmus exchange opportunities in European partner universities.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO, and points for Applied Psychology at UCC, DCU, or UL are typically competitive to high. You will need to meet general Leaving Certificate minimum requirements, usually including English at Ordinary level or above; Higher-level Maths is not always mandatory but strengthens your application and is essential for the quantitative elements of the course. Subjects such as Biology, Home Economics, or LCVP components related to health and social care are useful preparation. QQI Level 5 or 6 awards in Social Care, Health, or Community Development can provide a progression route into the degree for applicants without traditional Leaving Certificate results. Mature students aged 23 or over may apply directly through the mature entry process, and HEAR and DARE schemes support access for students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Career Prospects

Demand for psychology-related skills is growing in Ireland, driven by increased investment in public mental health services and a competitive labour market that values behavioural insight. A PSI-accredited bachelor degree is the recognised first step toward becoming a chartered psychologist, making it a strong foundation for postgraduate training. Graduates who do not pursue professional psychology find that their research, analytical, and communication skills are transferable and valued by employers. Starting salaries for graduate-level roles typically range from approximately €28,000 to €36,000 per year, with significant growth potential after postgraduate qualification.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are increasingly used in psychological research, for example in analysing large datasets, detecting patterns in behaviour, and supporting mental health apps and chatbots. You will need to develop a critical understanding of how algorithmic systems can both assist and bias psychological assessment and intervention. Roles in human factors, UX research, and organisational behaviour are becoming more intertwined with AI-driven platforms. However, the empathetic and relational dimensions of professional psychology remain firmly human-centred and are unlikely to be automated.
