What will you learn?

This apprenticeship combines paid employment in a social care setting with academic study leading to a BA (Apprenticeship) at NFQ Level 8. You will develop skills in person-centred care, risk assessment, safeguarding, and working with diverse client groups including children, people with disabilities, older adults, and those experiencing homelessness or addiction. Academic learning is delivered through Atlantic Technological University, while your workplace provides hands-on supervised practice — typically two to three days on the job and the remainder in online or block-release study each week. You will build competencies aligned with CORU's standards for Social Care Workers, preparing you for professional registration. Modules cover social policy, psychology, ethics, and reflective practice.

Required Education

To enter this apprenticeship you must secure a contract with an approved employer in a social care service, as SOLAS coordinates placements through the Generation Apprenticeship programme. A Leaving Certificate is required, typically including at least six subjects with passes at Ordinary level, and subjects such as English, Biology, SPHE, or Home Economics are useful preparation. Some employers and ATU may require a minimum grade in English given the significant written reflection and report-writing involved. Applicants without a Leaving Certificate may be considered if they hold a QQI Level 5 award in Health and Social Care or a related area, and prior care work experience is highly valued by employers. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly, and HEAR or DARE supports can apply to the university component. Entry is driven by employer recruitment rather than the CAO points system.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified, CORU-registered social care workers in Ireland remains strong, driven by an ageing population, expanding disability services under the EPSEN Act, and ongoing investment in community care. Graduates with a Level 8 award and workplace experience are well positioned for employment immediately after completing the apprenticeship, as they are already embedded in the workforce. Salaries for Social Care Workers in Ireland typically range from approximately €32,000 to €45,000 gross per annum, with higher earnings in senior or supervisory grades. Progression within organisations and into management is achievable with further study or experience.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are beginning to support administrative tasks in care services, such as care-plan documentation, scheduling, and data reporting, which may reduce paperwork burden for front-line workers. However, the relational, ethical, and emotionally attuned nature of social care work means that direct human presence remains central and cannot be replicated by technology. You will be expected to use digital care management systems and may encounter AI-assisted assessment tools, so digital literacy is increasingly important. Overall, AI is more likely to change how you document and manage information than to significantly reduce the need for skilled social care practitioners.
