What will you learn?

This degree prepares you to work as an outdoor education and adventure professional, combining academic study with extensive practical training across a wide range of activities and environments. You study the theory of outdoor learning, group dynamics, risk management, and environmental sustainability alongside hands-on skills in activities such as kayaking, rock climbing, hillwalking, orienteering, and surfing. Much of your week is spent outdoors — at sea, on rivers, on mountains, and at climbing walls — developing technical competency and earning national governing body (NGB) awards from bodies such as Paddle Ireland, Mountaineering Ireland, and Surf Ireland. Work placements at adventure centres, outdoor education centres, and youth services give you real industry experience. Some programmes include international field trips or Erasmus opportunities to broaden your environmental and cultural understanding.

Required Education

Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects, including English and usually Mathematics at Ordinary level or above. Physical education, biology, or geography are useful subjects, though not always mandatory. CAO points requirements are moderate, reflecting strong and consistent demand for places. If you do not meet LC requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET/PLC award — for example in Sport and Recreation or Outdoor Education — provides a recognised progression route into the degree. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply directly through the mature-student CAO stream, and HEAR and DARE access schemes support applicants from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities. A current first aid certificate, fitness evidence, and swimming competency are often required at interview or induction.

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified outdoor education professionals in Ireland is steady, supported by growing interest in adventure tourism, outdoor therapy, and active school programmes. Ireland's expanding adventure tourism sector — particularly along the west coast — continues to create employment opportunities for skilled, award-holding graduates. Many graduates combine instructing roles with NGB coaching or assessor qualifications to increase their employability and earning potential. Starting salaries typically range from approximately €26,000 to €32,000 gross per annum, with experienced centre managers or development officers earning €38,000–€50,000.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has a relatively limited direct impact on the day-to-day delivery of outdoor education, where human judgement, situational awareness, and interpersonal skills remain central. However, digital tools and AI-assisted platforms are increasingly used for risk assessment planning, route analysis, weather forecasting, and participant progress tracking. As an outdoor education professional you will benefit from understanding these tools while recognising that the experiential, human-centred nature of the work cannot be replicated by technology. AI may increasingly support the administrative and planning aspects of running an adventure centre or outdoor programme.
