What does a Research Assistant do?

As a Research Assistant you support funded scientific or clinical research projects in Irish universities, hospitals, or research institutes, working under the supervision of a principal investigator or senior scientist. Your daily tasks include preparing and processing biological samples, running laboratory assays, operating and calibrating analytical instruments such as automated analysers, and accurately recording experimental data. You collaborate closely with postdoctoral researchers, biomedical scientists, and academic staff, contributing to team meetings and helping to troubleshoot procedures when results fall outside expected parameters. Administrative duties such as monitoring reagent stock levels, maintaining equipment logs, and ensuring compliance with health and safety protocols also form a regular part of the role.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Research Assistant

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the research institute just before eight o'clock, sign in at reception, and head straight to the laboratory to check overnight incubations. You are working on a funded project investigating inflammatory markers in patient blood samples, so the first priority is confirming that the cell cultures left running yesterday are behaving as expected. You record the temperature and CO₂ readings from the incubator log, note everything in the paper lab book, and then enter the same data into the shared electronic lab management system your team uses. By half eight you are processing a batch of plasma samples that arrived from a linked hospital site. This means centrifuging the blood tubes, aliquoting the plasma into labelled cryovials, and storing them correctly in the minus eighty freezer. Every tube, every label, every storage box position is documented. If a sample is mislabelled or stored incorrectly it cannot be used, so accuracy matters more than speed.

Required Education

A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree is the typical minimum requirement for a Research Assistant post in Ireland, with relevant disciplines including Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or a related life science. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics, as strong performance in these supports entry to science programmes at universities such as UCD, UCC, TCD, University of Galway, DCU, and UL, as well as the technological universities such as TU Dublin and MTU. Some posts, particularly those with a clinical laboratory focus, may require or strongly prefer candidates who hold CORU registration as a Biomedical Scientist, though many research-focused roles do not mandate statutory registration. A Level 9 Postgraduate Diploma or Master of Science can strengthen your application and is often pursued alongside or following a Research Assistant post. This role is widely regarded as a stepping stone into PhD study, and many holders are simultaneously enrolled in or preparing for a doctoral programme funded through Science Foundation Ireland or other competitive research bodies.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Research Assistants in Ireland begin their careers after completing a Level 8 degree, often securing a post through a university research group or a hospital-based clinical research unit. With experience and, commonly, the completion of a PhD, you can progress to a Postdoctoral Researcher position, taking on greater independence in experimental design and data analysis. From there, career development may lead toward a lectureship, a senior scientist role in industry, or a research fellow position within bodies such as the Health Research Board or Science Foundation Ireland-funded centres. Those who move into industry typically find roles in medical device companies, pharmaceutical firms, and contract research organisations concentrated in Dublin, Cork, and the wider M50 corridor.

AI Impact on the job

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being integrated into research workflows, with machine learning tools now assisting in the analysis of large datasets generated by high-throughput assays and imaging platforms. As a Research Assistant, you are likely to work alongside AI-driven data analysis pipelines, which can accelerate the identification of patterns in experimental results but require you to understand their limitations and validate outputs manually. Routine data entry and some elements of image analysis are being automated, freeing more of your time for hands-on experimental work and critical interpretation. Rather than displacing the role, AI is reshaping it toward greater data literacy, and Research Assistants who develop competence in bioinformatics tools and statistical software will have a clear advantage.
