Pharmaceutical Science equips you with a deep understanding of how medicines are discovered, developed, manufactured, and quality-assured. You study chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and the regulatory frameworks that govern the Irish and European pharmaceutical industry. Practical laboratory work is central to the course, with modules covering analytical chemistry, formulation science, and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Most programmes include a significant work placement, typically in one of Ireland's major pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical plants, giving you direct industry experience. A typical week combines lectures, lab sessions, and project work, gradually moving towards independent research and industry-focused problem-solving in your final year.

BSc Biomedical Science | University of Galway
Entry is normally through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate that includes Chemistry and either Biology or Physics, ideally at Higher level. Higher-level Mathematics is strongly recommended and required by some institutions. CAO points for this course are generally moderate to high, reflecting strong demand. If you do not meet Leaving Certificate requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC award in Science or Laboratory Skills can provide an alternative entry route, with many TUs actively supporting this progression. Mature students (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature entry route, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible applicants.
The Irish pharmaceutical industry employs tens of thousands of people and consistently reports skills shortages at graduate level, making prospects for Pharmaceutical Science graduates very strong. Ireland is one of the world's leading exporters of pharmaceuticals, and investment in domestic manufacturing sites continues to grow. Graduate employment rates for this course are high, and starting salaries are competitive, typically in the range of €30,000–€38,000, rising significantly with experience and specialisation. The sector offers clear career progression, particularly for those who pursue further qualifications or move into regulatory and validation roles.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being applied in pharmaceutical manufacturing for process optimisation, predictive quality monitoring, and fault detection on production lines. In drug development, AI tools assist with data analysis, formulation modelling, and regulatory document preparation, reducing time-to-market. As a graduate entering the sector, familiarity with data analytics and digital manufacturing systems will become a growing expectation alongside traditional laboratory skills. However, the hands-on, GMP-regulated nature of pharmaceutical manufacturing means that skilled scientists remain essential and are unlikely to be displaced in the near term.
28 CAO courses lead to this qualification. Points shown are last year's Round 1 score.
