What will you learn?

Studying pharmacology at degree level gives you a deep understanding of how drugs interact with the body at a molecular and cellular level, covering topics such as drug mechanisms, receptor pharmacology, toxicology, and the processes by which medicines are developed and brought to market. You will explore how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolises, and eliminates drugs, as well as the pharmacological basis of diseases ranging from cardiovascular conditions to neurological disorders. Laboratory work is central to the degree, with regular practical sessions involving cell culture, animal tissue experiments, data analysis, and analytical chemistry techniques. In later years you may undertake a research project placement in a pharmaceutical company, hospital, or research institute, and some programmes offer Erasmus exchange opportunities. A typical week balances lectures, tutorials, and scheduled laboratory practicals, with significant independent study expected throughout.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO and typically requires a minimum of six subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including English and a laboratory science subject such as Chemistry or Biology, both ideally at Higher level. Higher-level Mathematics is strongly advised and Higher-level Chemistry in particular is considered essential by most programmes. CAO points for pharmacology programmes at UCD and RCSI are competitive, meaning you will generally need a strong Leaving Certificate performance across your best subjects. Applicants who have completed a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET/PLC award in science or laboratory skills may be eligible to apply through a linked progression or QQI quota route at some institutions. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly and are assessed on a combination of relevant work or study experience, and students may also access programmes through the HEAR or DARE schemes if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Career Prospects

Demand for pharmacology graduates in Ireland is strong, underpinned by the Republic's status as one of Europe's leading pharmaceutical exporters and a growing clinical trials sector. Entry-level salaries in quality, regulatory, or research roles typically range from approximately €30,000 to €40,000 per year, rising considerably with experience and specialisation. The sector has shown consistent growth and pharmacovigilance, regulatory affairs, and clinical data management roles in particular are in sustained demand. Graduates who pursue a Master's or PhD can access senior research positions or academic careers with significantly higher earning potential.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in drug discovery pipelines to predict molecular interactions, screen compound libraries, and model pharmacokinetic behaviour, meaning pharmacology graduates are now expected to have some familiarity with computational approaches and data analysis tools. AI-assisted analysis of large clinical datasets is accelerating pharmacovigilance work, helping to identify adverse drug reactions more quickly than traditional methods allow. While AI will automate some routine laboratory and data processing tasks, the need for scientific judgement, regulatory expertise, and experimental validation means graduate roles are evolving rather than disappearing. Programmes are beginning to incorporate bioinformatics and computational pharmacology modules to ensure graduates are equipped for a more data-driven industry.

How to apply

Applications for undergraduate BSc (Hons) Pharmacology programmes in Ireland are made through the Central Applications Office (CAO) at cao.ie, with offers based on Leaving Certificate points. Note that some providers may offer Pharmacology as a specialism within a broader Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences programme, so applicants should verify the specific course structure directly with each institution.
