Health & Social Care
As a Social Care Worker you provide direct support to vulnerable individuals across a wide range of settings, including residential care homes, disability services, addiction services, homelessness services, and community outreach programmes. You attend to the psychological, social, emotional and physical needs of service users — which may include children and young people in residential care, adults with intellectual or physical disabilities, or older adults requiring community support. Your daily work involves planning and reviewing individual care plans, facilitating activities that develop personal skills, managing crises when they arise, and liaising with families, colleagues, and other professionals such as social workers, psychologists, and healthcare staff. You may supervise support workers or care assistants and are responsible for maintaining detailed, accurate records in line with regulatory requirements. The role is deeply people-focused, requiring both compassion and professional boundaries.
Listen: a day as a Social Care Worker
Your alarm goes off at 6:45 a.m. You work in a residential care home run by a voluntary organisation in the Irish midlands, supporting six young people aged 14 to 17 who are in the care of Tusla, the Child and Family Agency. You arrive for the 7:00 a.m. start and receive a handover from the night staff, who walk you through any incidents recorded overnight in the house log. One resident had a difficult night and slept poorly, so you note that before the day begins. Between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. the house is busy. You prompt the young people to get up, prepare breakfast and take any prescribed medication under the supervision protocol outlined in each person's individual care plan. Care plans are living documents you return to constantly — they set out agreed goals, risk assessments and the specific supports each young person needs. You remind two residents about their school bus and help a third locate a lost school uniform.
A degree in Social Care Practice at NFQ Level 7 (Ordinary Bachelor) or Level 8 (Honours Bachelor) is the standard route into this profession; relevant programmes are offered at TU Dublin, ATU, SETU, TUS, MTU and other technological universities and institutes. Helpful Leaving Certificate subjects include English, Home Economics, Biology, LCVP, and any subject developing communication or analytical skills, though there is no single mandatory subject combination. A QQI Level 5 or 6 award in Social Care or Community and Health Services, obtained through a PLC course at a College of Further Education, can provide a pathway into a Level 7 degree via the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS). All practising Social Care Workers must register with CORU (Health and Social Care Professionals Council) under the Social Care Workers Register, which requires holding an approved qualification. Ongoing continuing professional development (CPD) is required to maintain CORU registration throughout your career.
Most Social Care Workers begin in front-line residential or community settings, working directly with service users under the supervision of a senior practitioner or team leader. With a few years of experience and a Level 8 degree, you can progress to a Senior Social Care Worker or Team Leader role, taking on supervisory responsibility for junior staff and greater autonomy in case management. Further progression leads to Social Care Manager or Person in Charge (PIC) roles, which carry regulatory accountability under HIQA (Health Information and Quality Authority) inspection frameworks; these positions often benefit from a postgraduate qualification in management, social policy or a related field. Experienced practitioners may also move into training and education, policy development, or specialist roles in areas such as disability advocacy, addiction services, or child and family services with Tusla.
AI tools are beginning to assist Social Care Workers with administrative tasks such as generating draft care plan templates, analysing patterns in incident reports, and supporting compliance documentation, which can reduce paperwork burden. Assistive technologies powered by AI — such as communication aids, smart-home monitoring systems and predictive wellbeing apps — are increasingly used to support service users with physical or intellectual disabilities, and Social Care Workers must be confident in helping service users engage with these tools. However, the relational, empathetic and ethically complex core of social care work is highly resistant to automation; human judgement, presence and trust-building remain irreplaceable. The main impact of AI is therefore likely to be augmentative, freeing up practitioners' time for direct care rather than replacing their professional role.
