What will you learn?

This one-year PLC course introduces you to the fundamentals of software development, covering programming logic, web technologies, and database design. You will learn to write code in languages such as Python and JavaScript, build basic web applications, and manage data using relational databases. Practical assignments make up a significant portion of your assessment, with projects that mirror real workplace tasks. A typical week combines classroom instruction with hands-on lab sessions where you develop, test, and debug software. Some colleges include a work placement component, giving you direct experience in a technology environment. By the end of the year, you will have a portfolio of small projects demonstrating your technical skills to employers and higher education institutions.

Required Education

Entry is typically open to Leaving Certificate applicants with a minimum of five passes, including English; no higher-level subjects are strictly required at Level 5 entry, though higher-level Maths is a strong advantage given the logical and numerical demands of the course. Applicants who did not sit the Leaving Certificate, including mature students aged 23 or over, may apply directly to the college and may be assessed through interview or a skills test. Successful completion of this QQI Level 5 award with a Merit or Distinction in key modules opens a QQI linked places route on the CAO to Level 7 and Level 8 computing programmes at technological universities and universities nationwide. HEAR and DARE schemes also apply to PLC progression routes for eligible applicants. Some ETB colleges accept applicants on the basis of relevant work experience or prior learning where formal qualifications are limited.

Career Prospects

The Irish technology sector continues to show strong demand for software talent at all levels, with junior developer roles consistently advertised across the country. Entry-level salaries for junior developers in Ireland typically range from approximately €28,000 to €38,000 gross per year, with significant growth potential as experience is gained. Graduates who progress to a Level 8 degree can expect considerably improved earning potential and access to specialist roles. The broad skills gained on this course, particularly web and database skills, are transferable across many industries beyond core tech firms.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence tools such as GitHub Copilot and AI-assisted code completion are already changing how software is written, and you will encounter these tools during the course. AI can automate repetitive coding tasks and help debug simple errors, meaning that junior developers increasingly need strong problem-solving and code-review skills rather than relying solely on memory of syntax. Understanding how AI-generated code works and identifying its errors is becoming a core professional skill. Overall, AI is reshaping rather than eliminating entry-level roles, and graduates who can work effectively alongside these tools will be more competitive.
