This concurrent four-year degree at the University of Limerick prepares you to become a post-primary teacher of practical technical subjects, specifically Construction Studies, Engineering, and Design and Communication Graphics (DCG). You study the theoretical and practical content of all three subjects alongside professional education modules covering pedagogy, curriculum design, and assessment. A significant part of your week is spent in workshops and studios, working with timber, metals, and technical drawing tools, developing the hands-on skills you will later teach. School placement takes place across multiple years, giving you real classroom experience in post-primary settings under the guidance of cooperating teachers and UL supervisors. You also explore materials science, structural principles, and manufacturing processes, grounding your subject knowledge at a level well beyond the Leaving Certificate.

Entry is through the CAO and points requirements are typically high, reflecting strong competition for places. You will generally need a minimum of six Leaving Certificate subjects, with at least two at Higher level, including English; Higher-level Mathematics is strongly recommended and may be required. Relevant subjects such as Construction Studies, Engineering, Design and Communication Graphics, or Physics are advantageous, as they demonstrate existing technical aptitude. QQI FET Level 5 or Level 6 awards in engineering or construction-related disciplines can provide a progression route, subject to panel competition and available places. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature student route and are assessed on the basis of relevant life and work experience. HEAR and DARE access schemes are also available for eligible applicants.
Demand for qualified teachers of technical and construction-related subjects in Irish post-primary schools has been strong, and graduates from this programme are typically well-positioned in the job market upon qualification. Registration with the Teaching Council (under Route 2 for Curricular Subjects) is required before you can teach in recognised schools, and this degree meets those requirements directly. As the Irish government continues to invest in STEM education and construction-related trades, teachers with practical technical expertise are valued. Permanent teaching posts can take time to secure, but substitute and part-time work is generally available in the short term.
AI tools are beginning to influence how DCG and engineering design are taught, with generative design software and AI-assisted CAD becoming more common in industry and filtering into educational contexts. As a teacher, you will need to help students understand when and how to use these tools critically, rather than uncritically accepting AI-generated outputs. Workshop-based skills in Construction Studies and Engineering remain largely unaffected, as physical fabrication and craft judgement cannot be automated. Keeping your own subject knowledge current with industry developments will be an ongoing professional responsibility.

How to apply
Apply through the CAO (cao.ie) for this undergraduate initial teacher education programme; the B.Tech (Ed) in Technology Education (Materials and Engineering) is a specialised concurrent teacher education degree offered at University of Limerick and is one of very few such programmes in Ireland. Leaving Certificate entry requirements typically include relevant Science or Technical subjects.
