As a Secondary School Teacher you plan and deliver lessons in your specialist subject or subjects to students across Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle classes, including those preparing for the Leaving Certificate, LCA, and LCVP programmes. You design engaging lesson materials, set and correct assignments, and sit examinations, keeping detailed records of each student's progress throughout the year. You work closely with year heads, special educational needs organisers (SENOs), special needs assistants (SNAs), and school guidance counsellors to support students with a wide range of academic and personal needs. Classroom management, safeguarding, and maintaining a safe and inclusive learning environment are central responsibilities in your daily role.
Listen: a day as a Secondary School Teacher
You arrive at school just before 8:15 a.m., unlocking your classroom and switching on the interactive whiteboard before the first bell. You teach five or six class periods of forty minutes each, and today begins with a Junior Cycle English class. You run a pair-reading activity on a short story, circulating between desks to prompt quieter students and keep the pace moving. One student has an individual education plan, so you have prepared a modified worksheet in advance, as agreed with the SENO and the SNA who joins you for this class. At morning break you grab a coffee in the staffroom and quickly check Vsware, the school's attendance and communication platform, to log absences from period one and reply to a message from a parent asking about their daughter's mock results. The conversation takes longer than expected and you eat your lunch at your desk.
To become a secondary school teacher in Ireland you typically need an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in one or more subjects you intend to teach, such as Mathematics, Biology, English, History, or Business. This is followed by a two-year Professional Master of Education (PME), an NFQ Level 9 qualification offered by institutions including UCD, TCD, UCC, University of Galway, DCU, UL, Maynooth, and MIC. Some institutions offer concurrent four-year undergraduate programmes that combine a degree with teacher education, such as BEd programmes at Marino Institute of Education or MIC. Registration with the Teaching Council of Ireland is a legal requirement before you can teach in a recognised school, and newly qualified teachers must complete the Droichead professional induction process. Leaving Certificate subjects such as your chosen teaching specialism, Irish, and English at Higher Level are typically expected for entry to relevant degree programmes via the CAO.
Most secondary school teachers begin as newly qualified teachers (NQTs) completing the Droichead induction process, often on fixed-term or part-time contracts before securing a permanent post. With experience, you may take on additional responsibilities such as Year Head, Subject Department Head, or co-ordinator of a specific programme like the Transition Year or LCVP. Further progression can lead to roles such as Deputy Principal or Principal, which may require additional qualifications or leadership development through programmes offered by the Centre for School Leadership (CSL). Some experienced teachers also move into roles with the NCCA, the State Examinations Commission, educational publishing, or teacher education at third level.
AI-powered tools are beginning to assist teachers with tasks such as generating differentiated lesson resources, providing automated feedback on written work, and identifying patterns in student assessment data. However, the core of teaching — building relationships, motivating young people, managing a classroom, and exercising professional judgement — remains deeply human and is not readily automated. Teachers will increasingly be expected to help students develop critical AI literacy skills and to use AI tools ethically and effectively in their own practice. The Teaching Council and NCCA are actively developing guidance on the appropriate use of AI in Irish schools, meaning the profession is adapting rather than being displaced.
