Creative Arts & Design
Duration
4 years
Level
Bachelor
Outlook
Stable
This course teaches you how to design and style retail environments, window displays, exhibitions, and branded spaces that attract customers and communicate a brand's identity. You study colour theory, spatial awareness, props and materials, lighting design, and the principles of consumer behaviour. Practical studio work is central, with live briefs set by retail clients, and you develop physical displays and digital mood boards alongside your peers. Placements with Irish retail groups or department stores give you hands-on industry experience, and there are opportunities for study or project exchange in Europe through Erasmus+. A typical week combines studio workshops, drawing and design tutorials, visits to retail environments, and project critique sessions.
Entry is typically through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate, and you will need a minimum of six subjects including English and Mathematics at Ordinary level or above. Useful subjects include Art, Design & Communication Graphics, Home Economics, and Business, which demonstrate visual and creative aptitude. CAO points for this course are moderate, making it accessible to a broad range of students. If you do not meet the Leaving Certificate requirements, a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC award in Art & Design, Visual Merchandising, or a related field at a College of Further Education offers a strong progression route. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly to TU Dublin without standard Leaving Certificate points, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible students.
Demand for skilled visual merchandisers remains steady in Ireland, driven by the continuing importance of in-store experience as retailers compete with online shopping. Graduates with strong digital skills, particularly in 3D visualisation and digital display, are increasingly sought after. Freelance and contract work is common in this field, so building a portfolio and industry contacts during your studies is important. Salaries for entry-level roles typically range from around €26,000 to €32,000 per year, rising with experience and specialism.
AI tools are beginning to influence visual merchandising through data-driven planograms, AI-assisted trend forecasting, and automated layout optimisation for retail chains. You will likely use AI-powered design software to generate and iterate concepts more rapidly during your studies and career. However, the creative, tactile, and experiential aspects of display design — physical styling, spatial judgment, and brand storytelling — remain distinctly human skills. Understanding how to work alongside AI tools will be a practical advantage rather than a threat to your career.
