What will you learn?

This apprenticeship trains you in the full range of wood manufacturing and finishing processes used in joinery and furniture production. You learn to operate industrial woodworking machinery, set up and run CNC routers, and apply finishing techniques including sanding, staining, lacquering and painting to a professional standard. Practical training takes place on the factory floor with your employer, while off-the-job phases at an Education and Training Board (ETB) centre cover underpinning theory, technical drawing and materials science. A typical week combines machine operation, quality checking finished components and attending block-release classes. You develop strong skills in reading technical specifications, maintaining equipment and meeting production schedules in a real manufacturing environment.

Required Education

Entry to this apprenticeship requires you to secure a place with an approved employer registered with SOLAS through apprenticeship.ie. Most employers expect you to have completed the Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP), though a Junior Cycle qualification with relevant work experience may also be considered. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Technical Graphics, Construction Studies, Engineering and Mathematics, as there is a practical and numerical element to machine setup and quality control. No CAO points system applies; selection is made directly by the employer, often through interview and a practical aptitude assessment. Mature applicants over 21 who can demonstrate relevant workshop or manufacturing experience are also welcomed by many employers. SOLAS coordinates registration, and apprentices must meet basic fitness and safety requirements suited to a manufacturing environment.

Career Prospects

Demand for skilled wood manufacturing and finishing tradespeople in Ireland remains steady, driven by ongoing construction activity, fit-out projects and strong export activity in the furniture sector. Qualified apprentices typically find employment quickly, as the supply of certified tradespeople in this specialism has not kept pace with industry demand. Irish furniture and joinery manufacturers increasingly invest in automated production, meaning CNC-skilled workers command strong employment prospects. Gross annual salaries for qualified tradespeople typically range from around €32,000 to €45,000, with experienced production leads earning more.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is beginning to influence wood manufacturing through AI-assisted CNC programming software that optimises cutting paths, reduces material waste and speeds up setup times. Machine vision systems are increasingly used on production lines for automated quality inspection, detecting surface defects faster than manual checking. As an apprentice, you will benefit from learning these emerging digital tools alongside traditional craft skills, making you more versatile on the factory floor. The hands-on, physical nature of finishing work and machine oversight means the trade itself is unlikely to be displaced by AI in the near term.
