Physicist & Priest
Maynooth priest who invented the induction coil.
Nicholas Callan was born in 1799 in Dromiskin, County Louth. He showed a keen interest in science from a young age and went on to study at Maynooth College, the national seminary for Catholic priests in Ireland, where he later became a professor of natural philosophy. He also studied in Rome, deepening both his theological and scientific knowledge before returning to Maynooth to teach.
Callan spent decades conducting experiments in electricity at Maynooth, working with modest equipment but remarkable curiosity and persistence. In 1836 he invented the induction coil, a device that could transform low electrical voltages into much higher ones — a breakthrough that laid important groundwork for later technologies including radio and medical equipment. He also developed one of the most powerful electromagnets of his era. Though he never sought fame or commercial gain, his discoveries earned him a lasting place in the history of science.
You do not need a famous university or a big city to change the world — Callan made his breakthroughs from a quiet college in County Kildare. Whatever subject lights you up, following that curiosity seriously and patiently is often enough to do something truly important.
