Healthcare Campaigner
Campaigner whose honesty changed Irish healthcare.
Vicky Phelan grew up in Mooncoin, Co. Kilkenny, and was a bright and determined student from an early age. She went on to study at the University of Limerick, where she pursued her passion for languages and education. She later completed a master's degree, showing that learning never stopped being central to her life. Her time in education gave her the communication skills and confidence that would later make her such a powerful voice for others.
Vicky was diagnosed with cervical cancer and later discovered that an incorrect smear test result had not been disclosed to her — part of what became known as the CervicalCheck scandal. Rather than stay silent, she took a landmark legal case against the laboratory responsible, refusing a confidentiality clause so that other women could know the truth. Her courage forced the Irish health system to confront serious failings and led to major changes in how patients are informed about their care. She spent her remaining years campaigning tirelessly for transparency, dignity, and women's health rights in Ireland.
Vicky's story shows that one person willing to speak an uncomfortable truth can change an entire system. You don't need a title or position to make a difference — you need conviction and the courage to keep going even when it's hard. Whatever injustice you see around you, your voice matters.
