Professional Golfer
Three-time major winner and a famous perfectionist.
Pádraig Harrington grew up in Rathfarnham, Dublin, and attended Coláiste Éanna secondary school. He came from a sporting family — his father was a GAA footballer — and showed a keen interest in golf from a young age, taking up the game seriously as a teenager. He went on to study accounting at Dublin City University, showing that ambition in sport and academic effort are not mutually exclusive.
Harrington turned professional in 1995 and spent years grinding on the European Tour before breaking through to the highest level. Known as an obsessive perfectionist, he worked relentlessly on every aspect of his game, often breaking down his swing to rebuild it — a risky move for any professional. That dedication paid off spectacularly when he won back-to-back Open Championships in 2007 and 2008, then added the PGA Championship the same year to claim three major titles in total. In 2024, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, cementing his place as one of Ireland's greatest ever sportspeople.
Pádraig's story shows that being deeply serious about improving — even when you're already good — is what separates the best from the rest. He never coasted on natural talent; he questioned everything and kept working. If you're willing to put in that kind of honest effort in whatever you love, the results tend to follow.
