What does a Sports Coach do?

As a Sports Coach you plan, deliver and evaluate training sessions for individuals or groups across a chosen sport, whether in a recreational, developmental or competitive setting. You assess participants' existing abilities, design appropriate training programmes, and adapt your coaching style to suit different ages, abilities and goals. Your working day involves running drills, demonstrating techniques, giving constructive feedback and monitoring each participant's progress over time. You work closely with athletes, parents, school management, club committees and, at higher levels, sports science support staff such as physiotherapists and strength and conditioning coaches. Maintaining equipment, supervising facilities and promoting safe, respectful participation are also core parts of the role.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Sports Coach

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6.45 a.m. on a Tuesday in early October. You work for a sports club in Limerick that runs both school partnership programmes and community coaching sessions, and today is one of your busier days. You pack your kit bag with cones, bibs, a whistle, a stopwatch and a clipboard holding this week's session plans, then drive to a local secondary school where you deliver a lunchtime basketball programme under a service-level agreement the club holds with the school. You arrive at 8.30 a.m. and spend half an hour in the PE office reviewing the session plan you drafted yesterday. The group is a mixed-ability First and Second Year cohort, so you have noted modifications for three students who are newer to the sport. You check that the sports hall is free and set up your station drills — lay-up practice, passing lines and a small-sided game grid — before the students arrive at 1.10 p.m.

Required Education

There is no single mandatory qualification to become a Sports Coach in Ireland, but most employers and clubs expect recognised coaching awards. Relevant Leaving Certificate subjects include Physical Education, Biology and any sport you already participate in at a high level, though any strong LC performance can support entry to further study. At further education level, QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC courses in Sport and Exercise, available through many Colleges of Further Education, offer a practical pathway. At higher education level, a Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Sports Science, Sports Coaching or Physical Education — offered by institutions such as UL, DCU, ATU, TU Dublin and University of Galway — is increasingly expected in professional coaching roles. Sport Ireland's Coaching Ireland framework provides sport-specific coaching qualifications at Foundation, Development and Performance levels in partnership with National Governing Bodies, and these are widely required by clubs and schools. Garda vetting is mandatory for anyone coaching children or vulnerable adults in Ireland.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Sports Coaches in Ireland begin as volunteers or part-time coaches with local GAA, soccer, rugby, athletics or swimming clubs while completing their initial coaching qualifications through their sport's National Governing Body. As experience and qualifications grow, coaches may move into paid roles with schools, sports partnerships, Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs) funded by Sport Ireland, or professional and semi-professional clubs. With further education, such as a Level 8 degree or postgraduate study in sports coaching or sports science, coaches can advance to lead coaching roles, academy management positions or roles with county boards and national squads. Some experienced coaches move into sports development, sports administration or teacher education, particularly if they hold a Professional Master of Education (PME) and register with the Teaching Council.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered video analysis tools are increasingly used in elite and semi-elite sport in Ireland to review athlete technique, track movement patterns and generate performance data that coaches can act on quickly. Wearable technology and data platforms can automate the collection of training load and recovery metrics, shifting the coach's role from data gathering towards interpretation and decision-making. However, the relational, motivational and adaptive human elements of coaching — building trust, reading emotions and responding in the moment — cannot be replicated by AI, meaning the core of the role remains firmly human. Coaches who develop digital literacy and learn to integrate these tools effectively will be better placed to work in high-performance and professional environments.
