Paralympic Swimmer
Paralympic swimming champion from Clontarf.
Ellen Keane grew up in Clontarf, Dublin, and attended school on the northside of the city. She was born with a limb difference affecting her left arm, but this never stopped her from pursuing sport from a very young age. She discovered swimming as a child and quickly found it to be both a passion and a place where she truly belonged. Her early commitment to training alongside her schoolwork laid the foundation for everything that followed.
Ellen first competed at the Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008 at just thirteen years of age, making her one of Ireland's youngest ever Paralympians. Over the following years she faced periods of self-doubt and stepped back from elite competition, but she returned to the sport with renewed determination. That comeback led to her greatest moment: winning gold at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games in the SB8 100m breaststroke, becoming a Paralympic champion. She went on to become one of the most recognisable and celebrated Irish athletes of her generation.
Ellen's story shows that stepping away from something and coming back stronger is not failure — it is growth. If you are facing a tough patch in school, sport, or life, her journey is proof that patience with yourself and belief in your own potential can lead to something extraordinary.
