As a Professional Athlete you train, compete and perform at the highest level in your chosen sport, dedicating the majority of your working life to physical conditioning, tactical preparation and competition. Your daily routine involves structured training sessions with coaches and strength and conditioning staff, recovery protocols, nutritional planning and video analysis of your own and opponents' performances. You represent clubs, provincial teams or national bodies such as the GAA, IRFU, FAI, Golf Ireland or Boxing Ireland, and your schedule is shaped by league fixtures, cup competitions and international tournaments. You work closely with sports scientists, physiotherapists, nutritionists and performance analysts, as well as commercial partners who sponsor your career.
Listen: a day as a Professional Athlete
Your alarm goes off at 6:45 a.m. at your club-provided apartment in Limerick. You eat a measured breakfast your nutritionist has planned — oats, eggs and a protein shake — before driving to the training ground by 8:00 a.m. You weigh in and complete a brief wellness questionnaire on the team's GPS monitoring app, rating your sleep quality, mood and muscle soreness. The sports scientist reviews the data before the session begins. The morning session runs from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You start with forty minutes of strength and conditioning in the gym under your S&C coach, focusing on posterior chain work and injury prevention exercises. Then the squad moves outside for a two-hour technical session led by the head coach, running set-piece drills and small-sided games. It is repetitive and physically demanding, and mistakes are corrected immediately and in detail.

icould career stories
Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
There is no mandatory academic qualification to compete as a Professional Athlete, and entry is primarily determined by talent, performance and selection. Leaving Certificate Physical Education, Biology and Business are useful supporting subjects, and many athletes combine secondary school with academy or development programmes run by the GAA, IRFU, FAI or Athletics Ireland. Sport Ireland and a number of technological universities and universities — including TU Dublin, ATU and UL — offer sports science, strength and conditioning, and performance coaching programmes at NFQ Levels 7 and 8, which athletes pursue alongside or after their playing careers. QQI Level 5 and 6 PLC courses in Sport and Exercise are available in Colleges of Further Education and offer a practical route into understanding performance science. No statutory professional registration body applies to athletes themselves, though coaches and support staff are governed by bodies such as Coaching Ireland.
Most Professional Athletes develop through underage club structures, school sport and talent identification programmes before earning a professional contract or securing Sport Ireland athlete funding. Early career years are spent building experience in domestic competitions — for example, the SSE Airtricity League, the United Rugby Championship or the All-Ireland series — before progressing to higher-profile or international competition. As peak performance years pass, many athletes transition into coaching, sports management, media commentary or performance analysis roles. Planning this second career while still competing is increasingly encouraged by bodies such as Sport Ireland's Personal Development Programme.
AI-powered performance analytics tools are already used by elite Irish clubs and national squads to analyse movement, fatigue levels and tactical patterns in far greater detail than was previously possible. Wearable technology combined with machine learning provides coaching staff with real-time data on an athlete's physical load, reducing injury risk and informing training decisions. While AI cannot replicate the human skill, creativity or competitive instinct of an athlete, it is transforming how performance is measured, coached and optimised at every level. Athletes who are comfortable engaging with data insights and performance technology will increasingly have a competitive edge.
