Discover the best cycling in County Monaghan, from quiet drumlin lanes to club rides and greenways. Your insider guide to getting on the bike.

County Monaghan is quietly one of the most rewarding cycling counties in Ulster, and locals will tell you that straight away — the drumlin landscape means you earn every descent, but the views across the lakelands and rolling hills make every climb worth it. The county sits in the heart of the Ulster Lakelands, and its network of relatively quiet rural roads is a genuine pleasure to ride. Whether you are a complete beginner looking for a flat-ish loop or a seasoned cyclist hunting for a hilly challenge, the roads here will suit you down to the ground.

The Monaghan town area is the natural starting point for most visitors. From the town centre you can pick up signed rural loops heading out towards Rossmore Forest Park, where forest tracks offer a gentler introduction to off-road riding — perfect if you are not yet confident on busy roads. The park itself is free to enter and has ample parking just off the R189, about two kilometres southwest of Monaghan town. Further north, the roads around Clones and Castleblayney open up longer, more challenging routes with proper climbs and fantastic lake views around Lough Muckno — the lake loop near Castleblayney is a local favourite and stays quiet even at weekends.

If you want company on the bike, Monaghan Cycling Club is the county's longest-established club and welcomes riders of all abilities. They run regular group spins throughout the year, typically departing from Monaghan town, and their social rides are a brilliant way to learn the best roads from people who have ridden them for decades. Similarly, Clones Cycling Club organises rides in the northwest of the county and is well worth contacting if you are based closer to that end. Joining a club spin, even as a visitor, is usually as simple as showing up — just check their social media pages for current meeting points and times before you travel.

A local tip most visitors miss: the back roads between Glaslough and Emyvale are almost traffic-free and stunningly scenic, passing close to the grounds of Castle Leslie Estate. Locals treat this corridor as a hidden gem for easy paced riding, particularly on weekday mornings. It is also worth knowing that the village of Glaslough has a small café where you can refuel before tackling the return leg — a handy stop that does not always appear on cycling apps.

Getting set up is straightforward and relatively affordable. If you have your own bike, there are no fees for riding public roads or Rossmore Forest Park. Club spins are generally free or ask for a nominal annual membership of around €30–€50. If you need to hire a bike, options in the county itself are limited, so it is worth contacting local sports shops in Monaghan town in advance — Monaghan Sports on Park Street has catered to cyclists in the past. Budget roughly €20–€30 per day for a decent hire bike if you arrange one through a nearby provider. Helmets are strongly recommended and usually included in any hire.

Getting there and getting around: most cyclists drive to their start point, and parking in Monaghan town is plentiful and largely free in the car parks off North Road and near the Leisure Centre. Bus Éireann serves Monaghan town from Dublin and Belfast, and the bus station is a walkable distance from Rossmore Forest Park — though you will obviously need to arrange a bike once you arrive. If you are travelling by car, the M1 and N2 bring you into the county quickly, and rural roads are generally well surfaced and signposted.
