Walk scenic forest trails, discover castle ruins and spot wildlife at Rossmore Forest Park, one of County Monaghan's finest outdoor escapes.
Rossmore Forest Park sits just on the southern edge of Monaghan town, making it one of the most accessible green spaces in the county. Managed by Coillte, the park covers a generous stretch of mature woodland and rolling terrain, offering a genuine sense of escape without having to travel far at all. Whether you are a seasoned walker or simply looking for a quiet afternoon out, the park has enough variety to keep you happily occupied for several hours.
The park is well known for its network of walking trails that wind through towering conifers and broadleaf trees, passing over streams and along ridgelines with lovely views across the County Monaghan drumlin landscape. One of the real highlights is the ruins of the old Rossmore Castle, a striking Gothic Revival structure that collapsed in the mid-twentieth century. The remains sit within the woodland in a way that feels genuinely atmospheric, particularly on an overcast day when the mist settles between the trees.
Wildlife is plentiful here, and patient visitors are often rewarded with sightings of red squirrels, deer and a wide variety of woodland birds. The park is one of the better spots in the north midlands for red squirrels in particular, as the mature conifer stands provide ideal habitat. Bring a pair of binoculars if birdwatching interests you, and move quietly along the trails for the best chance of seeing something memorable.
Getting to Rossmore is straightforward. The park entrance is located a short drive south of Monaghan town, easily reached by car with parking available on site. If you are travelling from further afield, Monaghan town is accessible by Bus Eireann services from Dublin, Enniskillen and other regional towns, from where the park is a manageable distance by taxi or a longer walk for the energetic. There is no admission charge to enter the park, though donations are always appreciated to support its upkeep.
For what to bring, sturdy waterproof footwear is strongly advised regardless of the season, as the trails can become soft and muddy after rain. Pack layers, a flask of something warm, and a simple trail snack. The park has picnic areas that are ideal for a relaxed stop midway through your visit. Dogs are welcome on leads, which makes it a popular choice for families with pets as well as those with young children.
Local tip: most visitors arrive mid-morning and head straight for the castle ruins, so if you want a quieter experience, start your walk on one of the lesser-used perimeter trails first and save the ruins for later in your visit. The light filtering through the canopy in the early afternoon is also particularly good for photography around the castle, and you will often find the main path near the ruins considerably quieter by that point.
