Paddle the calm waters of the River Shannon at Banagher in County Offaly. A brilliant outdoor adventure for beginners and seasoned paddlers alike.

Banagher, a charming riverside town in County Offaly, sits right on the banks of the mighty River Shannon and is one of the finest spots in the Irish Midlands to get out on the water. The Shannon is wide, calm and remarkably sheltered around Banagher, making it genuinely welcoming for first-time kayakers while still offering enough stretch and scenery to keep experienced paddlers happy. The views from the water — reed beds, willow trees, grazing cattle on the flood plains, and the odd heron standing perfectly still — are something you simply cannot get from the towpath.

Banagher Marina is your main point of contact when you arrive. Several local operators run kayak hire and guided paddle sessions from the marina and its surrounds. Guided sessions typically last around two hours and cover basic paddle technique, water safety and the best routes to follow. Hire costs usually run from roughly €20 to €35 per person depending on the session length and whether equipment is included; it is always worth ringing ahead to confirm availability and pricing before you travel, as sessions can fill up on fine weekends.

What to bring is straightforward but worth thinking about. Wear clothes you do not mind getting wet — even on a calm day a splash is likely — and pack a dry bag for your phone and valuables. A light waterproof jacket is sensible even in summer, as the breeze on the water can be cooler than you expect. Operators will provide a buoyancy aid and paddle, so you do not need to bring your own kit. Sturdy footwear that can get wet, like old runners or water shoes, is far better than sandals.

Getting to Banagher is easiest by car. From Tullamore, the county town of Offaly, it is roughly a 30-minute drive south-west on the R357. Parking is available near the marina and along the riverfront without much difficulty outside of busy summer days. Public transport connections to Banagher are limited, so if you are coming from Dublin or Galway without a car it is worth checking Bus Éireann routes to Birr or Tullamore first and arranging a short onward taxi. The drive through the Offaly boglands on the approach is worth the effort in itself.

Local tip most visitors miss: the stretch of river just north of Banagher Bridge towards Shannon Harbour is quieter than the main marina area and offers a lovely long paddle through some of the most undisturbed wetland habitat on the entire river. Ask your hire operator about heading that way — it adds real magic to the trip, especially in the early morning when the wildlife is most active. Shannon Harbour itself, a few kilometres upstream, has the atmospheric ruins of a grand canal hotel that makes for a wonderful turning point.
