Join the craic at Matt Molloy's pub in Westport, County Mayo, for authentic traditional Irish music sessions in a legendary setting.

Matt Molloy's pub on Bridge Street in Westport is one of the most celebrated traditional music venues in all of Ireland. Owned by Matt Molloy, the flautist of the renowned Chieftains, this atmospheric bar has been a heartbeat of the County Mayo music scene for decades. The pub itself is a beautifully preserved Victorian-era space, with low ceilings, wooden snugs, and walls lined with old photographs and memorabilia — every corner tells a story before a note is even played.

Westport town centre is the nearest hub, and Matt Molloy's is easy to find right on Bridge Street, just a short stroll from the Octagon, which is the town's main square. If you're travelling by car, there is a public car park on James Street within easy walking distance. Westport is also served by Bus Éireann routes from Galway, Castlebar, and Ballina, and the town has its own train station with regular services from Dublin Heuston — making it one of the most accessible spots in the west of Ireland for a day or weekend trip.

Sessions take place most evenings, with the music typically starting later in the night, often from around nine or ten o'clock. The format is informal and community-driven — local and visiting musicians gather in a circle and play sets of jigs, reels, hornpipes, and slow airs in the true tradition. There is no stage, no microphone, and no barrier between the musicians and the listeners, which gives the whole experience an intimate, living quality you simply cannot replicate anywhere else. Admission is free; you just pay for your drinks at the bar.

What to bring is straightforward — yourself, good company, and an open ear. If you play a traditional instrument such as fiddle, uilleann pipes, tin whistle, bodhrán, or flute, you are genuinely welcome to join in, provided you know the tunes and respect the session etiquette. Beginners are advised to listen first and ask a regular musician before sitting in. Expect to spend roughly €5–€7 on a pint of Guinness or a craft beer, and the bar also serves spirits and soft drinks. There is no food kitchen, so eat before you arrive.

A local tip most visitors miss: arrive early, ideally by eight o'clock, to secure a seat close to where the musicians settle. The pub fills up very quickly on busy nights, and latecomers often find themselves standing near the door with only a distant sound of the music. Regulars also know that Tuesday and Thursday evenings tend to draw some of the strongest local players, when the session has a particularly authentic, unhurried feel compared to peak weekend nights.

Westport itself is well worth making a full weekend of — the town is a gorgeous base for exploring the wider County Mayo landscape, from the pilgrim mountain of Croagh Patrick to the wild shores of Clew Bay. Combining a walk or cycle along the Great Western Greenway by day with an evening at Matt Molloy's is one of the finest ways to experience the genuine social and cultural life of the west of Ireland, and it costs very little beyond the price of your drink.
