Live Music and Traditional Sessions Across County Mayo

EntertainmentMayoReads339

From trad sessions in Westport pubs to live gigs in Castlebar, County Mayo has a rich, vibrant music scene waiting to be discovered.

County Mayo has a music culture that runs bone-deep, and you don't need a festival wristband to experience it. The best of it happens on ordinary evenings in ordinary pubs, where a fiddle case gets opened at the bar and suddenly the whole room shifts. Westport is the undisputed heartbeat of the scene — Matt Molloy's on Bridge Street is the place most visitors hear about first, and rightly so. Matt Molloy is a member of The Chieftains, and the trad sessions in his pub are the real thing: spontaneous, unhurried, and completely free to listen to. Get there early on a weekend evening if you want a seat.

Castlebar, the county town, punches above its weight for live entertainment. Breaffy House Resort occasionally hosts tribute and cover acts, but it's the smaller venues in the town centre — particularly Davitt's Bar and Loft Bar — that draw a loyal local crowd for everything from singer-songwriters to full bands. Cover charges, when they apply at all, rarely go above €10, and many nights are completely free. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming to strangers, which is exactly what you want when you don't know anyone in the room.

If you want to go a little further off the well-worn path, Ballina in the north of the county has a quietly excellent scene centred around venues like The Broken Jug on O'Rahilly Street. Ballina is Mayo's second-largest town and easy to reach by bus from Westport or Castlebar. Sessions here tend to feel less rehearsed and more conversational — musicians arrive in ones and twos and things build organically over the course of an evening. Bring cash, as many smaller venues still don't take cards for entry or at the bar.

For something more structured, keep an eye on the TF Royal Hotel and Theatre in Castlebar, which is Mayo's main mid-sized performance venue. It hosts touring Irish and international acts across comedy, music and theatre throughout the year. Tickets typically range from €15 to €35 depending on the act, and it's worth checking their programme if you're planning a trip around a specific night out. Booking in advance online is straightforward and recommended, especially for weekend shows.

One local tip most visitors miss: if you're in Westport for a trad session, ask a local which night the Westport Traditional Music Festival warm-up sessions happen in the smaller pubs around the town — these informal pre-event sessions are where serious musicians gather, and the standard is extraordinary without the crowds. More generally, Tuesday and Thursday evenings tend to be the sweet spot across Mayo for authentic, unhurried trad — busy enough to have atmosphere, quiet enough to actually hear the music. Parking in both Westport and Castlebar is straightforward in the evening, and Bus Éireann runs regular services connecting the main towns if you'd rather not drive.
