Learn to row on a city river

"What if the Liffey, Lee or Corrib became your training ground?"

Why this is so fun

There is something quietly mad about gliding through the middle of a city before most people have had their breakfast, watching bridges slide past while your arms finally figure out what an oar actually wants from them. Rowing teaches you patience fast — the boat wobbles the moment your ego arrives. You become part of a crew, reading the water, matching your rhythm to strangers who quickly stop being strangers. On the Corrib or the Lee, with the city waking up around you, it feels like you have unlocked a version of Ireland nobody else bothered to look for.

Someone who did this

Cian (37), Westport — site foreman, rebuilding a 1987 Honda CX500 in his shed

My brother-in-law rows with Corrib Rowing Club in Galway and spent about two years mentioning it before I eventually ran out of excuses.

First 3 steps

  1. 1Find your nearest club on Rowing Ireland's website and check spring course dates.
  2. 2Email a Dublin, Cork or Galway city rowing club to ask about beginner sessions.
  3. 3Show up to a taster morning — clubs usually lend kit, just bring layers and old runners.
