Spot Burren wildflowers in May

"What if Arctic and Mediterranean flowers grew side by side on the same rock?"

Why this is so fun

The Burren does something that should not be possible: it puts Arctic mountain flowers and Mediterranean sun-lovers on the exact same slab of grey limestone, and in May the whole strange plateau lights up. You crouch down to find a vivid blue spring gentian the size of your thumbnail, and it genuinely stops you in your tracks. There is no dramatic peak moment, no finish line — just you, the wind off Galway Bay, and the slow realisation that paying attention to small, quiet things is one of the best skills you will ever build.

Someone who did this

Peadar (22), Donegal Town — works part-time in Centra, obsessed with amateur geology since secondary school

I nearly didn't bother going because the bus from Ennis to Kilfenora took longer than I expected and I arrived in bad form.
